Mayer’s Record Run Between Barstow and Los Angeles
Engineer Mayer’s three hour fifty minute run between Barstow and Los Angeles set a speed record for the Coast Lines. Despite restrictions between Summit and San Bernardino and Pasadena and Los Angeles, Mayer averaged about 60 miles an hour on the desert stretch, saving an operation at the Santa Fe hospital. It was Mayer’s second passenger trip, and the feat drew wide comment from train and engine crews in Santa Fe offices.
