Rumanian war office reports Germans and Bulgarians defeated along the eastern frontier, with Rumanians in possession east of the Danube. In the Austrian front, Rumanian forces push forward after spirited fighting near Horzerek and Zet region, capturing heights west of that point.
Reports from Berlin to the Exchange Telegraph show German subscription lines to the new war loan are weak in the first two days with many subscriptions coming from cities, savings banks and munition firms but little response from the puller. At the Maine state fair in Lewiston two balloonists, forty Hudson of Pascumpah Vermont and Philly Young of Lewiston, attempted a dual parachute drop. The balloon caught fire and collapsed at about 40 feet, injuring Young with fractures in both legs while Hudson suffered back pain. Both were taken to Central Maine General Hospital.
Rumors spread that Vermont state fair would skip its dates September 12 to 15 after a health ruling limiting young children’s attendance. Secretary Davis said there is no truth in the reports and claimed the fair will be the largest exhibition yet, with preparations nearly complete for Tuesday, September 12.
