Wood chopper challengers seek Moot bout in Boston

Edward Moot of Weathersfield VI, the wood chopping champion who felled five cords in a day, is challenged by Australian champions H Jackson and Peter McLaren. They plan to perform in Boston at the Orpheum during October 12 week under William Morris Inc. The Australians hold all tree falling and log sawing titles and offer 50 cash prize for defeating them. A winner would gain entry to Melbourne contest with expenses paid. prize money totals 2500.

Sucker Swallowed Ring Rescued From Indiana River

Miss Marie A. Gross of Logansport lost and recovered a diamond ring that she had tied to fishing line in a boat while bathing on Pottawatomie Point on the Wabash river. Frank Hanly later pulled a fish with the line from a large sucker, discovering the ring inside after cutting the line and cleaning the fish.

Fires Consume Crest Hall and Ocean View in Winthrop Blaze

Early morning fire at Crest Hall and Ocean View hotel on Ocean Boulevard Winthrop destroys two summer houses and several cottages. Loss estimated at 150000 dollars. Guests evacuated with two women reported missing and aiding support from East Boston and Fort Hanks. Several structures, including Quean View hotel and cottages, burned or damaged as flames spread. Local property owners Fred Hall and J O Brien connected to Crest Hall, with other residences valued up to 20000 dollars gone.

Norwich Cadets Host Open Reception at Nor wick University

Northfield October reports the annual reception for Norwich university students hosted by President and Mrs. Spooner at their Main street residence. Over 200 cadets and guests attended as Gen Grenville M. Dodge and Gen O Howard were honored. A recital by ladies quartet and Miss Macferrill followed chapel talks by Norwich graduate Ges. Dodge then left for New York amid praise for the university’s growth.

The Outlaw Set Back At Union Agricultural Fair

The seventh annual fair of the Union Agricultural Society, incorporated, closed Thursday after a successful event. Three pairs of matched horses from Randolph, Marre, and Stratford were shown with premiums awarded to the top two in each pair. Gents drivers displayed by several local names with premiums to the first two. The final day featured two principal races.

Man Arrested Over Diamonds Offers Gems for Three Dollars

James Cameron of Manchester New Hampshire was arrested for larceny after attempting to sell more than $1000 in diamonds and gems for $3 to undercover officers in Boston. He claimed the jewels were bought for investment. Police hold him for the October grand jury term and seek owners of possibly stolen items.

Burlington attorney Russell S. Taft filed a petition for a new trial in the divorce case of Winans L Taft versus Russell S Taft. The motion cites alleged newly discovered evidence and targets the January 1909 supreme court term. Mrs Taft was granted a divorce October 16 1906 on adultery grounds with alimony custody orders.
