Paris reports that Chevroux wood was partly captured by French forces last night. German shelters were demolished and found filled with dead soldiers, as official notices confirmed.

Howth Merrimac New Jersey May 25 Paul Youngemonc a German who has been in the country 15 years was today sentenced to one year in jail but suspended on a fine of 49 for demurring wrench gear. The jail sentence later was superseded witnesses tried there.
Boston May 25 Eighty eight corporations and individuals were indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiring to monopolize interstate commerce in onions. The government alleges a national onion association controlled most of the crop, fixed prices, hoarded supply and operated from Kenton Ohio and Springfield Massachusetts with monthly nationwide meetings to coordinate the scheme.
Washington May 6 conferees Henise and Sette reach a modified plan amid administration comments that it aligns with an Independent bill. The Senate Amendment would allow export embargos to curb shipments to Germany via intermediaries. The new section keeps military information controlled and lets a jury including the president decide what is valuable to the enemy.
In Washington D C officials announced another loan package to Britain as part of Allied support. The measure, including loans to Italy and allocations for American supplies, notes a large total and rapid payment terms amid wartime aid negotiations.

Ossining May 25 Dr Arthur Warren Waite was executed at Sing Sing prison at 11 30 pm for the murder of his father in law John E Peek of Grand Rapids Michigan. He walked to the chair with calm steps, received three shocks, and died without a word. He had confessed poisoning his wealthy father in law to gain his wife a large share of the estate and spent the two hours before death in prayer. The chaplain described Waite as viewing the doom as a curious adventure.
Washington, May 25. President Wilson proclaims the week ending June 23 as Red Cross Week urging Americans to give generously to aid the armed forces and relief efforts. The proclamation calls on every citizen to do their part in support of justice and liberty through Red Cross service at home and abroad.
Washington DC May 25 The two million dollar war tax proposal in the House was the sole authority of recommendation at the Senate committee meeting. A committee of Republican teams against Democrats favored material reductions. Some favored cuts to one billion two hundred million others to one and one quarter billions and others even lower. It seems certain substantial reduction will be agreed upon and short term bonds will be issued to keep the difference.
Lomion May 24 reports pronounced German naval activity in the Baltic. A Cratre Speagate from ager Weliender 7 raw Wasting Unouphont details unclear but indicates increased German fleet presence in the region.
Washington May 26 Foreign Secretary Balfour expressed gratitude to the American people for their reception of the British war mission and praised what the United States has achieved in 40 days since entering the war. He said he would convey to allies that America will soon throw full weight into the battle for democracy, noting delays in Congress but defending public life in free nations.
The British war mission arrived in Niagara Falls Ontario from Washington and crossed into Canada this morning. The Balfour party was met on the international suspension bridge by Canadian officials and prepared to continue toward Toronto.
Washington D C May 25 the Italian mission completed its duties here last night and left on a special train with destination unannounced. The departure was withheld from publication at the government's request as a safety measure and American newspapers were commended for voluntary censorship.

Nearly 30 officers of the first regiment of Vermont Uniform Hank Knights of Pythias met in Vincitia h rooms for a business meeting and military instruction. Col. C. M. Willey presided with Lieut. Col. J. G. Hoyt assisting. The gathering discussed military opportunities amid world events and voted to hold the next encampment at St Johnsbury August 4 to 8. A local committee coordinated the commissary and a substantial supper for officers. An informal afterdinner program featured Col. N. J. Roberts of the major general's staff. The war in Europe boosts interest as members seek to improve military knowledge and an Army or National Guard officer may assist at the August encampment. Adjournment came after 9 o'clock with many delegates returning home.

A breach of promise suit for 10000 dollars was filed by Pearl Puller of Denver against Merrill Russell of Montpelier. The suit cites an acquaintance formed in California last January while Russell was rural mail carrier. Russell, now in Fresno, reportedly fixed a spring wedding date. letters between parties are to be used in court.
Windsor May 25 The jury in federal court acquits D H Bennett former Bridport postmaster charged with defrauding the government of about 1700 by padding stamp cancellation records After five hours deliberation the panel finds him not guilty with witnesses including Postmaster Calhoun of Middlebury and Assistant Postmaster P J Garvey of Burlington testifying The case was prosecuted by Y A Bullard Burlington and Bennett was defended by R E Brown Burlington and J B Donaway Middlebury
At Plattsburg N Y May 25 bayonet drill mirrored charges used in Europe with straw dummies as the enemy. An official board will investigate a hall fight during supper. Major Tibbetts Captain DeWitt and Captain Masteler serve on it. Participants H A Miller of Portland Maine and Thomas Ervin Me suffered injuries including a broken jaw.
In Montreal on May 25 more than 20 000 French Canadians gathered at open air meetings to protest conscription. The gatherings escalated into riots injuring several and damaging windows at La Press and La Patrie. Anti conscription banners proclaimed down with conscription and referendum before conscription as marchers clashed with soldiers.
Washington May 15 guests at the White House included the prince of Udine and other members of the Italian war mission. They dined with President Hoover and officials, meeting American leaders such as Chief Justice White, Senator Maulsbury, Speaker Clark, and other cabinet members and ambassadors as they prepare for negotiations later in the month.
