Rome reports yester day Italians broke Austro Hungarian lines and captured over 1,000 prisoners as the second stage of the Trieste drive began. Air action dropped ten tons of bombs while counter attacks were repulsed. London cites new gains on the Gorisia front with more than 3,000 prisoners taken in the first phase.
Paris May 24 Germans counterattacks in the Veauclerc plateau region were repulsed by French forces with heavy losses to the attacker. Since May 1 French forces have taken prisoners in the area, according to the official war statement.

State's Attorney W Trujoy and Sten CB Mann traveled to Hellows Park after arresting J W Patterson at Springfield last week. Patterson confessed to stealing at least twelve 1917 Ford autos and named dealers in West Westminster, Fay Whitcomb, A F Putman, EM Kimball, and Comatech as buyers. Police say engine numbers were altered and that more cars are hidden near Brheen and in Boston area. Officers plan further inquiries and expect to locate additional vehicles.
Rutland May 4 Paul W Coolidge a young local merchant and member of the Knights of Pythias died yesterday from pneumonia at his father's home Judge A G Coolidge. He attended Dean Academy and Darttown hospital training before joining the Paul W Coolidge company Grocery. His wife and daughter mourn his death as he was taken to the hospital.
London reports four of five airships raided eastern counties last night. Official statement says bombs dropped and escaped though pursued. One man was killed in a Norfolk village. overall damage described as negligible.
In Waterbury on May 24 the Vermont state hospital for the insane reported eruptive cases of smallpox under observation. Louis Casst Lonin Casal longtime Italian community figure in Barre died at his Addison Place home last evening at 30 oclock after a period of declining health from multiple diseases. He leaves wife Mia, two daughters Misses Lente and Louies Cun, both of Barre. Born in Saltrio Italy he came to America in youth and worked as a granite cutter, later prominent in workers councils and labor movement. Funeral will be held Saturday at 2 PM at his house followed by burial at Hope Cemetery with flowers omitted per his wish.
The funeral for the late Ire C Calef financier and philanthropist who died at his home in Washington village Monday at age 9 years was held yesterday. Many townspeople relatives and representatives from Barre organizations attended. Rev Pail Waller of the Galperedhst church in Woeabington officiated, praising his life. Bearers included Herbert C Calef Dana White F T Calef J K Fenner and COR Allen. Interment followed at the Washington village cemetery.
