A Manila report says Japanese losses were incurred in an encounter near Formosa. St Peters has heard nothing of Russian success. London reports May 25 that CN correspondent at St Petersburg notes rumors of a naval battle off Formosa.
A Manila dispatch reports fifty ships sighted off the east of the Batin islands on May 20 moving northeast toward the Admiral Ivajrtvna fleet. The sighting suggests Rodjestvensky's fleet head ed toward the northeast as of May 25.
In naval circles it is believed Vice Admiral Rodjestvensky’s squadron moves northward in the Pacific to lure Japan into battle. The plan reportedly aims to force passage through the Korean straits after avoiding torpedo risk near the Pescadores Formosa and the Luchin islands, with both the Perouse Strait and the Tsuugary Strait cited as strategic routes.
The Post from Birmingham reports representations by Chinese and English and American correspondents urging relief for natives of Mansouria whose business and lands were ruined by Japanese and Russian combatants. Distress is expected to rise for the next year unless aid is provided.
Fighting renewed in Warsaw's Jewish quarter on May 25 amid a clash between Jewish socialists leading an assault on thieves and rough characters. At least six killed or wounded, with continued violence reported in the quarter.

Kere New York May 25 Frank Fortier of Marlborough street disappeared Sunday and was found yesterday lying on the ground with a head wound from a rope break. Fortier reportedly gave his wife his watch and money and said he was leaving forever. He kissed his wife and children and then departed, with evidence suggesting a despondent state and recent drinking.
Rutland on May 25 costs in the strike case F R Patch Manufacturing company versus Protection Lodge of Machinists were taxed yesterday. The verdict of $2,500 awarded to the Patch maker plus costs brings total judgment to $2,024.61 entered with County Clerk W A Harman. Plaintiff will take immediate steps to collect the fall.
New York May 25 The high profile breach of promise case of Mrs Katherine Lon versus W Gould Brohan valued at 250000 pounds was halted as counsel moved to push the trial to the June calendar call. Brohan’s attorney indicated efforts toward a settlement of the dispute.
Montpelier lawyers predict the supreme court may deny the women’s petition for a new trial in the Rogers case. A leading attorney stated the petition was not strongly pressed and that Attorney General Fitts dismissed the effort. A decision was anticipated tomorrow morning with a ruling expected by Saturday.
Jerome Ortelli testified at the luminary hearing of Herbert Willsit charged with lying with Sophia Ortelli a lodging house couple at 13 Chestnut street. Ortelli said he married in Barre Vermont and had one child. Wilkins was driven from the house by the girl's mother last fall and Ortelli followed.
Barre town records reveal the Pirie Tool Sharpening Company filing in Montpelier with $6,000 capital, 100 shares of $50 each. Incorporators include Eric Pirie Edith Pine Mary Pirie Glynn and William Pirie, linked to the late James Pirie who designed a tool sharpening machine for the granite trade. The Barre location will host the invention intended to improve sharpening of quarry tools.
Passengers aboard car number 15 of Barre street railway were briefly endangered yesterday when the vehicle left the iron and climbed the rail at a curve. Motorman Howe steadied the car, women aboard grew anxious, and the car was soon back on track. No injuries reported though some passengers feared another wreck.
A sunny calm day highlighted a Barre event with a large turnout as guests toured the club grounds. Welcome figures M. Willey and committee members greeted visitors on the veranda while Gilbertson's orchestra played. George N. Lilden won a driving contest with 193 yards, and Alexander Milne took a 10 yard approach by holing out in two strokes. Barre Railroad Directors elected new officers with Morse as president and Stowell as vice president and MD.
Local report describes Levi Bixby capturing a two pound eel like fish in the Langdon estate pond between Montpelier and the Junction. Fred Winn, a Montpelier post office employee, shot the creature.
City council opened bids for coal with Calder & Richardsons and Hugerton Lehigh offering prices of 7.40 to 7.50 per ton. Both bids matched common price for single ton purchases, and the matter was referred to the committee on supplies. Other items discussed included water extension, enlarging the back of the fire station, and Granite Street sidewalk plans.
Captain Patrick J. Rogers of Company E Vermont National Guard of Barre withdraws his resignation to lead a reorganization. Nineteen members were added, recruitment widened to ages eighteen to thirty one, with a designated recruiting officer. The armory club will change operations, aiming to fill ranks to about thirty more, strengthening the company’s strength and morale.
A large audience, including new Richmond chapter visitors, enjoyed the event after a formal program. Grand Matron remarks followed by a banquet in which over 190 attendees shared a generous meal prepared by the brothers, making it one of the most enjoyable Ruth Chapter occasions.
Arrangements are made for a conference on the street railway extension matter next Tuesday afternoon at 2 in the city council chamber. The city council and FLW Stanyan general superintendent of the Barre Railroad will attend, and Provident J J Flynn of the Barre Montpelier Traction and Power Co has been notified to have the railroad represented if it derives.
