German forces intensify bombardment in Champagne and Vosges sectors while keeping pressure on the Picardy front. French repulsed a local attack north of La Fecht last night and repelled a raid on small posts northwest of Orvillers Sorel.
French patrols north of Hangard near Amiens and near Courcy plus west of the Meuse returned with prisoners. French repulsed a German raid northwest of Orvillers Sorel. Artillery fights continued in Champagne and Vosges, with Haig noting violent German fire and successful Allied raids northeast of Roberq Planders.
Amsterdam May 14 Emperor William issues a proclamation asserting Lithuania will share Germany war burdens and be recognized as an independent allied state. The document states Lithuania allied with the German empire will have its conventions framed to serve German interests and Lithuania will participate in the war effort.
Washington May 14 Samuel Gompers president of the American Federation of Labor today appointed a commission to go to Mexico to establish friendly relations between organized labor in Mexico and the United States. Members of the commission are James Lord of the American Federation John Murray Secretary of the Pan American labor conference and Santiago Iglesias provident of the Porto Rican federation.
Former Premier Caillaux testified in the Burnet Rouge treason trials. He denied naming Marx of Mannheim as the source of funds for the Bonnet Rouge, claiming he had not heard of Marx until 1917 and only learned of the name during a parliamentary discussion. He said a Swiss merchant once handed him a paper linking France and Switzerland trade, which he dismissed. He reiterated he never paid Bonnet Rouge beyond prewar subscriptions that were exhausted at hostilities start.

Beaulieu France May 14 James Gordon Bennett proprietor of the New York Herald died at 4 30 this morning after two days unconscious Mrs Bennett was with him He was born in New York City May 10 1841 He lived much of his career in Paris directing the Herald from abroad and shaping its modern impersonal style while backing daring ventures to make news through exploration and expeditions. He married the Baroness de Reuter in 1914.
London May 14 The total British casualties for the week ending today reach 41 812 with 5 085 officers and 36 727 other ranks killed or wounded. Wounded or missing include 2 123 officers and 33 023 other ranks. Reports of British losses are usually delayed and complete records are not yet issued but the present total is likely the heaviest weekly toll of the war. The figures imply heavy action in Flanders and Picardy.
Washington reports that eight steel ships totaling 48 150 tons were completed in the week ending May 11, with fourteen vessels launched for 57 1 percent of capacity. Deliveries include one refrigerator ship two tankers and five cargo vessels. The first wooden ship for the government the Andra 3500 tons built at Portland was also produced. A broader note says over half the year’s tonnage has been delivered since January.

Platinum price fixed at 108 an ounce, iridium at 175, palladium at 136. Jewelers may use 25 percent of stocks for commercial purposes with a waiver. Delivery of manufacturer platinum will be waived if a waiver similar to manufacturers is provided.
