Armed groups seized Tampico as federal troops evacuated. The city’s port, long contested, fell under rebel control amid widespread destruction of barracks and infrastructure. Local officials reported minimal resistance during the rapid advance.
Washington May 14 press confirms Tampico in the hands of the constitutionalists. Admiral Mayo reports federal troops blew up barracks before retreating, firing ceased by 4 pm. Mayo given power to deploy ships on the Panuco river if needed, hospital ships offered for Tampico wounded, no landing without orders.
Roberto Penqueira, Carranza aide, says General Gonzales's Tampico entry ends foreign risk and spares friction, enabling re opening of commerce and industry across interior Mexico. He cites Tampico as a free port linking to world markets and assures oil properties protection, with a Maxatlan advance anticipated on the Pacific coast.
New York on May 14 reports the tital hospital ship Solace docked with 101 patients from Vera Cruz. The vessel also brought the bodies of Henry Palliam, Clarence R. Hirshberger, and Hunter Dehsm, who perished from wounds in the Mexican city action. Dobson’s death raises the American toll to twenty.
Miss Gladys M Goodell of Woodbury Vermont wed Artemas T Burleigh of Ward 1 Franklin New Hampshire yesterday at Christine Church in Franklin New Hampshire The bride was a teacher at the New Hampshire Orphans Home and is daughter of Mr and Mrs Jason Goodell of Woodbury Vermont.

Washington May 14 reports that waterborne traffic has begun passing through the Panama Canal for the first time, according to dispatches from the Panama railroad head- quarters in New York. Amateurs at the Montpelier Gun Club lead after day one with John M. Gates of Leominster scoring 164, followed by Dr Clarence H. Hurr of Montpelier with 181 and George R. Steele of Boston with 180.
Talk of the Town reports the annual exhibit at the Mathewson school in Barre. About 149 students enrolled this year with growth in programs. Principal Pum perl says the exhibit, run by remaining faculty, will occupy two basement rooms featuring drawings, sculpture, and digitized works.
The Baptisl church auditorium overflowed for a dramatic cantata Halshaxar rendered by church youth. The story of Belshazzar includes Daniel's interpretation of handwriting on the wall and Cyrus’s assault on Belshazzar’s kingdom. Cast includes William Inglis Cyrus Fred Inglis Daniel Richard Lemont Antonia Wood and others with a 25 member chorus. Leadership by Mrs Ratchelder and Miss Spaulding praised. solos by William and Fred Inglis highly enjoyed.
State offices announce the merger of Old TS with Massachusetts Handling & Insurance Co, forming Massachusetts Barrington & Insurance Co. with about 3 million dollars in capital. Home offices remain in Saginaw, Michigan, while Boston branches expand. no policy or agency changes. Farrington of Barre will rep the combined business in Vermont.
The Vermont state Y M C A convention in Woodstock featured Eibert S Brigham discussing Christian agencies relation to agriculture and farm labor. Dr M A Honline spoke on farm labor. Officers elected include Chairman W Van Patten Burlington Vice chairman Redfield Proctor Proctor Recording secretary and treasurer G F North Burlington. Several committee members were chosen with re-elections noted.
SN Parker, manager, states the Barre Citizens’ Band will field a stronger season with filled vacancies and improved talent. He notes only modest pay for rehearsals and urges support to deliver what may be the best Vermont band in Barre history.
In Highgate Center Vermont a large crowd paid tribute to Ruf Edward Percy a Marine killed at Vera Cruz on April 22. The service included a Salvation Army ceremony a church service and a military funeral with cheers and volleys at the grave. He was born near the village and served in the navy before his death.
A Concord New Hampshire crowd at the railroad station bade farewell to Rufus F B Percy formerly of the city and a marine who died at Vera Cruz. His mother Minnie Percy and brother Grover Cleveland Percy accompanied the body to Highgate Vermont. Salvation Army Commander Evangeline Booth sent a telegram of sympathy calling Percy a faithful soldier and expressing hope of a blessed reunion beyond war.
In Philadelphia May 14 a vast tribute honored George McKenzie Tomnsett of the Florida and Charles Allen Smith of the New Hampshire. About 5000 people watched the flag draped coffins pass from Independence Hall to their local cemeteries as thousands more lined a three mile route. The ceremony echoed Lincoln era pomp with sailors marines and veterans in attendance. Several attendees fainted and two men were seriously injured. The Kansas fired salutes while buglers played taps.
Boston mourned three servicemen killed in Vietnam era violence as thousands, including five hundred military and civilian personnel, attended the funeral processions. Governor Walsh led officials, a naval honor guard conducted ceremonies, and large crowds gathered as schools closed and bells tolled. Seaman Watson, Private Percy, and Corporal Haggerty were laid to rest with full military honors in Cambridge and Highgate Center Vermont.
In Chicago the body of Samuel Meisenberg, a Chicago boy killed in the Vera battle, lay in state for three hours in City Hall. A massive crowd pressed to view the catafalque in Teipal bal, causing many near suffocation moments as women fainted and were helped by mourners.
New York May 16 nearly six hours on the witness stand in the Becker murder trial, Rose testified he collected money for Becker and described the underworld and Rosenthal's killing plot. He remained calm under aggressive questioning by Manton, admitted some discrepancies with earlier testimony, and revealed details about payoffs to Spanish Louie and others involved in the Rosenthal case.
The May 1 gathering of the Sunday school delegates from Washington County reported increased attendance and harmonious work across departments. Rev. George Holt was elected president, with Rev. William Shaw as predecessor, and a slate of officers including Mrs W H Turner as secretary and Dr C L Granger as treasurer. Police had to quell a crowd crush during the event.
