Allies made small advances on the main battlefronts in Flanders and Picardy while German infantry remained on the defensive. Heavy German artillery continued to bombard Allied lines as the Kaiser’s forces stayed restrained.
London May 11 French troops advanced their line slightly east of Locre on the Flanders front and captured several prisoners. British raiders west of Merville brought back prisoners and machine guns. An enemy raid east of Ypres was halted by British fire.
Washington May 1 the casualty list reports Private Leonard F Poy of 33 Madison Street Rutland Vermont among the slightly wounded. The roster lists six killed in action eight died of wounds forty five died of accident seven died of disease forty five died of other causes or wounded soverity four wounded firy thirty four previously reminting.
Fire swept the Baltic terminal on the Brooklyn waterfront destroying a one story brick structure used by New York Dock company. Loss of war supplies estimated at 50000 dollars. A cargo of foodstuffs cotton and general merchandise valued at about 100000 dollars was saved. Early reports of incendiary causes were dismissed as baseless with investigators citing spontaneous combustion in rotten material.
William Constant Wheeler of South Woodbury, praised for his steadfast claim as a surviving son of the American Revolution, is highlighted by fans amid reports that Nelson Moore, who died in Omaha, was the last such son. Wheeler’s father Comfort Wheeler served in the war and Wheeler himself remains active in historical remembrance, with ties to Valley Forge and regional military heritage.

In Montpelier two sessions of the Voters Ratification Council of Vermont were led by F I Brooks. A 14 member board, one per county, will set policy and fund campaigns to secure legislators who back federal prohibition ratification in 1910. A campaign director and headquarters will coordinate nationwide efforts. Names of the board were not yet published awaiting whether appointees accept duties.

Mr and Mrs F M Allen and daughter Florence share excerpts from son Russell B Allen in France April 1918 describing front bombardments shrapnel and air raids near D ore and trenches. He notes letters from family, receiving cigars cake cookies and guidance from the Y M C A tent. He mentions Dunkerque and an aviation unit, camera plans, and hopes for homeward peace.

The 35th annual Wash ington county Woman's Christian Temperance unit meeting met at Bethany church chapel Montpelier. Officers named include County president Mrs. E Mead Denne and treasurer Mrs. Bertha Bellway. secretary Martha Watson. auditor Ellen Dolby, with numerous superintendents elected for evangelistic Sunday school literature prison anti narcotics soldiers and sailors education and citizenship roles.
