British and Australian forces pressed a short front near Sailly le Sec east of Amiens. They gained about 500 yards along a 600 yard line and advanced 300 yards west of Morlan court despite heavy enemy shelling.

Washington D C May 1 Preliminary steps toward putting into operation a general plan for fuel conservation in power plants were taken today when the fuel administration appointed Tho m as district administrator engineer for the Pittsburg district and P Billing as special assistant. The plan aims to save 25 000 000 to 60 000 000 tons of coal used annually in industrial plants through correct operating methods. It includes personal inspection of every porter plant classification and rating of every plant and administrative engineer in each state or district. The program set in the Pittsburg district will be used as a model.
With returns from every precinct counted James Dahman, 12 years mayor of Omaha, failed of reelection to the city commission. He trails by about 1000 votes, his only path now a statewide vote. Votes will be counted tonight.
Washington May reports April lifted expectations for the winter wheat crop. The agriculture department bulletin at 2 15 p m indicates a large rise from the April estimate of 860 million bushels. Private forecasts in the last week range from 600 100 000 to 150 000 000 bushels.
Washington D C The war trade board announced it will restrict crude rubber imports to 100000 tons annually and cap licenses for importation at 25000 tons from May 6 to July 31 This reduces U S rubber imports by more than one third of the 157000 tons typical each year.
Premier Clemenceau visited American troops in Picardy and expressed pleasure at the cordial, harmonious cooperation between French and American forces. He inspected billets and kitchens and talked with officers and men as artillery fighting continued along the sector held by U S troops.
The La Corarde du Souve nir society in Paris proposes honoring American fallen in France by placing markers known as war crosses of the dead on each American grave. Current markers already decorate French, British and Belgian graves. The marker features a six inch metal laurel leaf with a metal strip showing the soldier's name unit and date of death.
Secretary Daniels commends six United States ship crew members for heroism during a aboard fire on the Ryntham. Despite smoke and danger, they reached the forepeak, rescued a deck worker who had collapsed, and prevented fatal fumes. Named are Chief Boatswain’s Mate Robert F. Partridge of Taunton, Massachusetts, and Chief Carpenter’s Mate Henry F. Norman of Quincy, Massachusetts, among others.
Paris reports United States railway aid with American locomotives and freight cars in French army machine shops. About 246 large motive power units are active, 700 freight cars of 2 ton capacity prepared, 700 more in assembly or on the way. French freight cars remain of the ten tin type.
Buenos Aires reports indicate former German minister to Argentina T. C Count Lexburg plans to sail tomorrow for Marmion aboard the Svewub Geter steamship Sumets. The fragment confirms a return voyage with unspecified final destination.

Chandler Waterman of Montclair New Zealand son of Herbert Waterman Brattleboro brother of Raymond Waterman and Mrs James Sexton nephew of Judge F L Waterman died of wounds in France after serving in the ambulance corps He attended Brattleboro J Hermon Maine and Columbia University before enlisting last summer.
Washington reports a proposal to extend direct credits to Allied nations including Prance Italy and other belligerents through Britain. Oscar T Croaby, president of the Allied Council on Finance and Purchases, returns from Europe to assist in drafting the law. The council, formed in Paris about five months ago, aims to ease Allied borrowing from the United States.

Washington, May 8 Regulations announced by Adjutant General McCain allow men of draft age to enter the fourth officers training camps beginning May 1. Eligible entrants must be in reserve officers training corps in accredited schools and either be in the senior course this year or have studied since January 1, 1917 with not less than 300 hours of military instruction under an army officer. Graduates of educational institutions offering military instruction under an army officer may enter if they have had less than one year of military training.

Action on pending resolutions and yesterday’s election results will be announced, with Dr Anne Howard Shaw, suffrage leader, among the speakers concluding the session.

Glenn W Merrill a Barre youth died at City hospital after an abdominal operation for peritonitis linked to a hernia. Born East Corinth July 27, 1904 he studied at Wentworth Institute Boston and worked in electrical firms there before returning home for the illness. He leaves his mother and stepfather Mrs and Mr Charles F Smith and grandmother Mrs Ella Androes. He was active in Boy Scouts and in St Mark's Methodist church in Brookline and Read ing. Services Friday at 2 pm at 84 Washington street with Rev Lipsky officiating. Interment Hope cemetery.
Federal authorities report four members including Major Wierd and Wood Jr were arrested by the prowuer guard for wearing uniforms resembling the regulation army outfit. They were paroled to the custody of local council with orders to cease wearing the outfits and to await further action.
