German efforts push at the British line north of Kemmel as Allied counterattacks regain ground in the LaClytte Voormezeele sector. The fighting remains persistent with modest territorial changes and renewed British pressure to hold positions.
London reports a British counterattack drove Germans from frontline positions in the Ta Clytte Voormezeele sector on the Flanders front. Two German divisions reportedly incurred heavy casualties in renewed assaults north of Kemmel, while British gains east of Amiens improved positions between the Somme and Ancre rivers.
Eleven people dead after a trench mortar explosion at Camp Bowie near Benbrook. Among the slain are Private Alfred J. Wood of Abilene and Private J. Davidson of Fort Worth from the 142d Infantry. English instructors and officers were nearby as the new mortars fired from a hill overlooking the trench system.
Washington May 1 Senator Hitchenek of Nebraska was named chair man of the Senate foreign relations committee. Aly Hitchenec, senior Democratic member, succeeded the late Senator Stone amid reorganizations due to recent deaths. The steering committee added two members to the military committee and filled vacancies on the finance and Philippines committees. Senator Robinson of Arkansas was named to the foreign relations committee to fill Stone’s vacancy.
With the British Army in France, May 9, fighting is in progress near Vierstrate southwest of Ypres. British forces were briefly pressed back by machine gun fire but regained most positions, with defenses in Voormeele-Clytte sector again held by the defenders.
Paris reports heavy artillery action on both sides of the Avre river during last night’s fighting. Official dispatches describe bombardment along a broad front north and south of patrols as forces clash in the Picardy region.
Canadian forces conducted raids at Neuville Vitasse inflicting heavy casualties and taking prisoners. They captured two machine guns and inflicted losses on German troops.
Fort Worth reports the tenth victim of a trench mortar explosion at Camp Bowie. A lieutenant and nine enlisted men died after the blast yesterday afternoon. Six others were wounded. Fei vate S. L. Davidson of Fort Worth died today. Investigators seek causes including shell size, gun jams, or faulty construction. English instructors at the camp are affected by the incident. About a hundred shells had been fired.
London dispatch reports a German submarine landed a man on the Irish coast who was seized by authorities. Parliamentarian James MacPherson said the man is in the Tower of London and will face a court martial.
A Times dispatch from Dublin reports heated parliamentary tensions over Ireland's crisis. It notes private prayers for a government transfer and warns of punitive measures against wine control. It stresses the western front demands soldiers while the government resists actions that could provoke a global revolt.

London May 9 The House of Commons debated a motion to appoint a committee to probe General Maurice's charges against the war office. Asquith said Parliament should not endlessly inquire into war conduct, while Lloyd George and Bonar Law prepared comprehensive replies. Debate expected to hinge on the merit of the code and related disclosures about the British front in France.
Washington County Sunday School association elected officers at Montpelier meeting. List includes President Rev Edgar Crossland, vice presidents from Barre Montpelier and other towns, secretary Mrs W F Milne, treasurer George Maker, and various superintendents. Wiseasset Me May 9 After an all night fight by citizens a fire swept the southern end of Westport an island town in Sheepsect river. Loss estimated at 200100 with 24 buildings destroyed mainly poor summer cottages owned by non residents. Fire checked before reaching the populated island area of 12 square miles causing damage to timber and pines.
Windsor county opens with judgment affirmed on first use of a rule allowing dismissal if attorneys fail to act. Cases include divorce Weeden versus Werden and LaClair versus Mont Wells River railroad. Several probate appeals, annulment petitions, and dismissals were handled across Windsor and Windham counties.
A brief hearing in Danbury postponed the Hatters case until tomorrow. Details remain unclear as officials and workers discussed appeals and labor actions after the tense session.
Adjt Gen WH Johnson ordered local boards to muster men for Vermont’s 500 man quota. Washington County expected to supply 161 with Barre likely contributing many. Chittenden and Rutland counties also listed large shares. Separate calls for 13 men to Camp Dix and Camp Lee. some registrants placed in deferred class after district board meeting.
County war board chairman George N. Tilden announced that Washington County’s 41 mechanical contingent members for the University of Vermont have been selected by self induction. The May 16 reporting date remains, with inductees from Barre, Montpelier, Waterbury, East Calais, and other towns.
Washington May Secretary Baker’s statement that more than 500,000 Americans would be in France by early this year drew wide attention in Congress. Some doubted the feasibility before the Senate Military Committee in January, as more than 500,000 have been sent for military reasons. The secretary urged public release in their exact terms. Boston May 9 Second Lieutenant James W Brown of the 10th Infantry from Quebec VI has been cited for extraordinary heroism in action against an enemy in France and has been recommended for the Distinguished Service Cross.
A joint committee of the Trades Union Congress and the Labour Party attacked the government over conscription in Ireland. They warned that enforcing conscription would cause bloodshed among Triphenes, Reglishmen and Scotchmen and create a large permanent occupation army.
