American refugees arriving from the capital report a growing anti Huerta sentiment. They mention a rumored rupture between Huerta and War Minister General Bianquet. Huerta reportedly tells confidants he will not resign though talk of a coup grows.
May 4 Paso, Texas General Carranza formally rejects mediators plan for a cease fire while the Huerta civil war continues. He sent a telegram to Warrington stating he cannot accept the armistice and will act only for Mexico's best interests, asserting the United States remains uninvolved in the internal conflict.
Washington May 4 A navy department report by Rear Admiral Howard cites bitter messages exchanged between Constitutionalists and Huerta readers at Itan zanillo Mexico. The letters do not mention or accuse the explosion of the Mexican liner Taela, according to the communication.
The armored cruiser Montana carried 17 American bluejackets and Marines killed in Vera Cruz street fighting to New York. British, French, and other ships saluted as crews stood at attention. The voyage passed amid full uniforms, arms presentations, and half mast flags, with General Funston's quarters at half staff.
President Wilson will travel to Brooklyn Monday to meet the Montana bringing home the bodies of the men who died at Vera Cruz. Secretary Dans made the statement after a conference with the president. The ship is expected to arrive in New York soon, with the return of American servicemen.
New York May 4 Policeman William J Kelly was mortally wounded by two holdup men in Brooklyn after they fatally shot a Greek restaurant keeper who resisted demands for money. Kelly was shot while pursuing the murderers and died later at a hospital. He was the third officer shot in Brooklyn within weeks.
New York on May 4 faced indictments against four election officers for alleged frauds tied to the April 7 special election that backed a constitutional convention. District Attorney Whitman said the probe will extend across districts as the case points to ballot box manipulation. The suspects include three Republicans and one Democrat: Daniel W Bresnatan George Wasen Joseph Kock and Louis Hohl a poll clerk. Indictments cite felony charges with penalties up to three years or fine. Evidence alleges inspectors voting illegally from 1 to 20 times at district polling places.
In Tuxedo Park New York on May 4 a large touring car owned and driven by Robert D Wrenn president of the United States Lawn Tennis association struck a group at the entrance of the town killing Herbert Loveray organist of the EpI... church and injuring Charles Spreckley the church sexton and his wife. The car was wrecked but Wrenn was unharmed. A coroner s investigation has been ordered.
New York May 4 District Attorney Whitman calls seventy witnesses in the second trial of Charles Becker accused of hiring a killer in the Rosenthal murder. Becker aims to take the stand in his own defense when the trial resumes Wednesday.

In Haverhill Massachusetts on May 4 Edward Castle aged 19 from Westville and Paul Helinger aged 32 from Crosby River were thrown from a wagon when a freight train demolished the wagon near Kingston. Castle released from Hale hospital. Helinger remaining with internal injuries and severe head and body lacerations. The crew says the wagon crossed the track then veered onto the line toward Newburyport where it was struck. The horses died and the wagon was wrecked. Police and train staff moved the injured to Haverhill for rapid aid. Sergeant Sullivan coordinated ambulances.

Dana on Elm Street Sunday with a blaze breaking out about 4 o clock It spread rapidly but furniture and most household goods were saved The fire caused an estimated loss between 2000 and 9000 dollars The blaze started in the kitchen or woodwork of the residence in the village May 4.

In London on May 4 a militant suffragette named Wood entered the Royal Academy of London and slashed a painting by John Singer Sargent, a portrait of Henry James. The act, by a member of the "wild women" group, drew a rough crowd as police arrived.
President Wilson appointed several postmasters on May 4 including Peter P. Goble named postmaster at Woodstock replacing Frederick Chaplin and Patrick H. Hurty named at Saxtons River replacing Myron Benton. Andrew H. Peters becomes postmaster at needfort amid expired commissions recorded in the notice.

Vergonnes May 4 John Richard Carroll of Rutland two years old was found dead Sunday morning with his trunk severed crosswise on the Rutland railroad track one mile north of the city. He was on the roof of a rear car of freight number 21 when he fell as the northbound freight moved. Train 52 is believed to have passed over the body before discovery. Carroll, employed three years, belonged to the Brothers Railroad Train News Rutland Aerie and other railroad groups. Funeral at St Peter Church Tuesday at nine o'clock.

The funeral for Mise Anna Boeker was held at her father's Collyville home with Rev. M. Le Boicourt officiating. Favorite hymns were sung and tributes read by Pastor Le Boicourt. Bearers included W. West Fairlee reports a third severe fire in seven years destroying a store owned by Charles Stevens, the slummer residence of Mrs. John Baxtman, and Henry Kingsbury’s newly bought home. Fire protection was inadequate, bucket brigades fought the flames, and losses were largely uninsured. The Titus lane blaze began mid afternoon, spreading to nearby homes and wiping out the three buildings. The Stevens store, conducted by Fred Perkins, stood beside Eastman Bros. property. Insurance on the Titus house and Stevens store was limited, with Stevens property insured for about 300 dollars and Kingsbury’s home insured at 600.
Nine year old Wendell Morehouse was struck in the face and clothing by spent and unfired birdshot while gathering Mayflowers in East Montpelier Barre Town. Dr. W O Geadrich removed pellets and treated lacerations as gunfire from Sunday hunts drew fire from nearby houses. No serious damage expected though bullets could have blinded. The incident underscores the danger of shooting toward houses during open season.

Mrs Harriet B Dodge, claimed as the only real daughter of the Revolution in Vermont, died at 92 at her granddaughter's home in East Montpelier after a long illness. Born in Fairlee to Samuel Woods, she married a shoemaker, lived in Berlin and Montpelier, and preserved heirloom Revolutionary relics. Survived by son Olcott Dodge of Brattleboro and granddaughters Mrs Vincent, Miss Mattie Dodge, and Mrs Annie Miller. Funeral Tuesday at Vincent Lome East Montpelier with private burial in Montpelier.
