Washington March 27 an executive order directs the Marine Corps to be increased to 17 400 men. Secretary Daniels reports the president signed the order authorizing enlistment to meet emergency needs. Marines will serve ashore and afloat as infantry artillery and machine gun troops, forming landing parties from navy ships.
A New York report states Morgan and Co offered to relieve the war department’s depot quartermaster from payments for army supplies. Congress has not passed the army deferred defense bill, causing stoppage of payments. A chamber committee is said to be involved in the matter.
Watertown Mass March 27 An attempt by three men to enter the government arsenal reservation by burrowing under a fence early this morning was reported by Patrolman Thompson who fired five shots after two men fired at him. While pursuing the two who fled they escaped through a hole and disappeared leaving others at large.

Held for grand jury on 18,000 bail after default. Charges allege forged death certificates for insureds James Smith Frank M Drown Porter and John Vesofaki to collect funds. Investigation followed.
Cambridge Mass March 87 The Yale Harvard boat race this year will be canceled immediately if there is any molesitation of new Congress, says Fred Moore Harvard graduate treasurer of athletics. He noted other athletic events will still be played as planned with limited prep.
St Albans March 27. Co I Vermont National Guard soldiers killed Sunday night are being examined by Maj. DeLaffre of the U S medical corps and will be mustered into federal service. Maj. DeLaffre reported to Capt. Pell this morning. All members of the company have been accounted for and more equipment is expected from the Montpelier arsenal. Rev W Anthony aged 36, pastor of the First Congregational church, volunteered as chaplain for a Vermont regiment in case of emergency. He is a native of Maitland Nova Scotia and has a wife and two sons. Anthony’s nephew Ellis Anthony is with the Royal Air Service in France and Mrs. Anthony’s brother Victor J Cox is a corporal with the English field artillery in France.
A naval recruiting party arrived from Boston to enlist men in the naval coast defense reserve, dubbed the minute men of the sea for probable early active service. Headquarters are at the Tayuhunga club. After Swanton they proceed to St Albans and Burlington.
St Albans on March 27 physicians from Franklin County met to discuss plans for a county area census. All offered services if needed, with many others across the county ready to assist.
Brattleboro March 27 Anne Rogers of Wilmington reported to Sheriff Mann that $300 was stolen last night in a Wilmington boarding-house by James Brown and Richard Garrity who have disappeared. The sheriff notified deputies in the surrounding counties. All three men were employees of the Ludington Woenware company.
Marean Connell, 23, rendered by bondsman, pleaded guilty in city court yesterday to bigamy after a year in legal limbo. He married Dorothy Carnell in 1915 while a prior wife and child lived in Waterbury. Bail was withdrawn. Connell was arrested for striking wife two, and Judge F P Swinnerton sent him to Windsor State Prison for 18 months.
Willis M. Priest of Milo was found guilty of murdering George Herbert at Five Islands on Seboodie lake. Jury deliberated four hours. Closing arguments were heard yesterday with defense and state presenting their cases before the verdict. Herbert was killed in his camp after a struggle and the state argued self defense.
Bristol police pursue a man named Leopold Coblanchi of Bere, linked to suspected espionage before his arrest. Investigators search for a second suspect and gather maps and a vehicle permit. Daniel Mather said he would present the case to the U S District Attorney Spellacy of Hartford.
Copenhagen reports no official reply to Washington on admitting armed American merchantmen to Danish ports. Indications point to following Holland by barring them. In London, the St Louis first American liner to reach the barred zone said no entry marines were seen aboard.

Mrs Philomena Nedda Geror long a resident of Altona New York died at 6 45 this morning at her niece s home 135 North Seminary Street Barre after illness from an abscess She had lived in Barre a short time and previously with relatives in New York and Vermont She was married in Altona and leaves two brothers George Neddo and Philip Neddo and a sister Mrs Blow The body will be taken to Altona for funeral services at the Catholic church with burial in that village
Sparks from a Central Vermont locomotive ignited a fire that burned the upper deck of a small barn at 14 Pose Street yesterday afternoon. Antonio Mistrangelo, an expressman insured on the building, owned the property. Inhabitants Jaspar Birzoe luero and A F Malanti discovered the blaze while the Mistrangulo family was away. Fire brigades were alerted by telephone. initial delay due to a faulty track chain led to a later arrival. Two streams of water and chemicals controlled the fire after two stops. Two tons of hay stored in the loft fueled the flames for over an hour. Doves sheltered near the barn as the roof burned. the horse quarters were empty at the time.
A spring housecleaning spree in a To-Masi block ended with Chief Liectate and Officer Hemder detaining five Graniteville residents on intoxicant charges. The crew, led by a captain named Jene Arnold, faced official intervention as neighbors reported the disturbance.
