French forces push toward the main German contingents near La Fere as artillery roars and a massive opening clash unfolds along the southern end of the frontline.
British forces progress toward St. Quentin as German positions near La Fere brace for a possible major battle. French troops engage in sustained artillery and clashes with German forces along a 25 mile front north of La Fere, while Haig reports ten miles east of the Somme.
In Berlin reports that German cavalry has joined French and British mounted troops for the first time since autumn 1914 on the western front. The dispatch notes contact with enemy forces in territory evacuated by Germany and suggests major events may be near as trench warfare subsides briefly.
German withdrawal in the sector is noted with no new territorial evacuations. French battalions attacked from the north bank of the Aisne and were repulsed, with continuing reported fighting in the area.
Paris reports heavy German resistance north of the Somme and Aisne with continued fighting east of St Quentin and Ham. Official communiques note French gains including canal crossings on the Somme and advances near La Peres and Mortecourt as well as liberated territory and towns north of the front.

It lists 21 fishing vessels damaged or sunk, plus counts of merchant vessels arriving and sailing from UK ports. It records merchant ships over 100 tons (excluding fishing and royal craft) and total arrivals and sailings, with submarines and mines causing several sinkings during the war period ending March 11. It also mentions 17 sailors among fishing vessel casualties.
Vergennes March 22 Hosea Langer, 15, of Ferrisburg, killed yesterday when exposed to ethylene gas at a generator plant. He died after emergency treatment and two days in hospital. Local responders battled to locate the source of the chlorine-plastic leak during the incident.

Agostino Brusa longtime Barre resident and noted Italian in the local colony died at his home 15 Howard street about 10:30 this forenoon from pleurisy. Born February 16 1864 in Wiggin Italy he emigrated to America thirty years ago and worked for several firms here. He leaves a wife five children and siblings in Italy. funeral Saturday at 2:30 pm with interment in Hope cemetery after a receiving vault at Finnwood.
Rev George F DeLane, pastor of the Universalist church in Chester, resigns and will not seek another Universalist pastorate. Superintendent Rev George Portier announced a convention set for Verimant and Quebec on March 22. The Chester pastor, who served since November 1914, will not lead another Universalist congregation.
Officials report a mediation offer is expected within days to avert conflict. A special committee led by Senator Leavens and Reps Hrdoks and Stuart toured Waterbury state hospital to compare conditions and prepare a report for the legislature. Gov. Graham signed acts authorizing municipal bonds, hospital rules, and state health measures among broad legislative proposals.

Wilbur Cutler, town grand juror for many years and longtime resident of East Barre, has died at age 93. He is survived by his wife Nora Canny, daughter-in-law Merton Cutler, and several grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the East Barre Congregational Church with Rev. James Kam officiating. interment will follow at the Orange Cemetery.
