Brussels reports German delegates at the conference accept Allied terms for turning over merchant ships and German securities in exchange for food. A monthly food allotment of 370000 tons was fixed, though Germany contended the amount was below their request.
In New York Harbor officials of the Boat Owners' association planned to place boats in operation under strong guard to break the harbor boat workers' strike crippling the port. A recruiting office opened for non union workers and about 200 discharged soldiers and sailors were hired. Private detectives and 200 special guards were engaged to protect boats and other property.
Washington March 16 reports from headquarters show war savings stamps sold in January at 45 cents per person nationwide. Vermont posted the highest per capita sales at $1.20, while New York state outside New York City recorded the lowest at 15 cents per capita.
New York March 15 Preliminary action toward testing the constitutionality of the war time prohibition act was taken in Weil ing here in a stockholders suit in the federal court against James Everard’s brewery The complainant Joseph FE Everard asked the court for an order restraining the defendant from suspending its manufacturing activities on May 1 next and the end of July 1 as required by the federal statute The complaint alleges that the emergency prohibition clause of the agricultural bill passed Nov 21 1918 is unconstitutional as a measure intended to suspend the national security and defense inasmuch as the armistice had been signed hostilities ceased and orders had been given preliminary to reduction of the military forces before that date
A sub committee of the commission on responsibility for the war reported that criminal prosecutions of those who caused the war are anomalous and unnecessary. It said the peace conference might create special measures or machinery to deal with war planners. A separate sub committee urged a high tribunal not blocked by rank. The commission is considering these reports.
Paris March 14. The British plan at the peace conference aims to sign separate preliminary treaties with the Central Powers as soon as Germany is defeated. After that, amendments to the League of Nations covenant would be considered and the league prepared for permanence, followed by the final peace treaty and the league’s full structure. The objective is to strip preliminary terms of impediments and secure signatures to restore normalcy.
The Steamship Hollandia reached New York from Brest with 1025 officers and men including the 102d Hospital Unit and Mobile Hospital No 101. Grounded aboard were 160 surgeons, 19 civilians, and 24 casualty officers from various service branches.
Paris reports the Council of Ten will prioritize the Poland–Germany boundary question with President Wilson present. The Polish boundary commission and the general territorial commission nearly consensus on a line that would place Kalcheviam and key strategic points under Poland, strengthening a barrier to western Europe.
Paris on Friday March 14 reports an unofficial discussion of neutralizing Austria. The plan shows strong backing among Austrian conservatives especially the church and the Christian Socials. The Tyrol neutrality is viewed as most advantageous for Italy and annexation of Vorarlberg to Switzerland is proposed amid Swiss anxieties over a German‑Swiss unification.
Secretary Tumulty announced receipt of a cablegram from Paris stating the plenary council has decided the League of Nations will be part of the peace treaty. The message responds to reports that the league would not be incorporated, stating there is truth in none of those rumors.
President Wilson wasted no time plunging into the peace talks in Paris. He met with Prime Minister Lloyd George at the new central residence in the Champs-Élysées, then with Colonel E. M. House, Premier M. Clemenceau, and others including Andre Tardieu and Maurice Louchert, as the war leaders' conference proceeded.
Northern Bankers association held its annual meeting and dinner at the Woodstock inn with about 100 attendees. Speakers were C.K. Spencer Jr. deputy governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and Rev. Donald Hi. Gerrish of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Officers elected include President W. H. Carten of Lancaster, Vice President W. d. Saxie of Windsor, Secret ary and Treasurer J. Letwurvead of White River Junction, Executive Committee J. A. Johnson of Newport and D. TL. Auckney of Troutdale, E. A. Davie of Bethel.
A blaze in Quebec City caused damage to about 12000 dollars before crews controlled it. One fireman was seriously injured after being knocked down in dense weather. J M Orkin & Co and European agencies liquor dealers were among the establishments destroyed.
Secretary of Labor Wilbur paroled twelve aliens today from a group of forty four who faced deportation orders. Twelve went to New York while twenty three cases remain undecided. most paroled were offered parole at original hearings before removal from Washington state.
Washington March 11 Officers announce demobilization figures from the War Department. A total of 1,419,486 men are ordered demobilized with 1,078,000 in designated grades. Reserve officers applying amount to 26,708 as the process progresses.
The Head Masters' Club of Vermont closed its session at the University of Vermont with two roundtable discussions on agriculture and home economies. Elections named H B Dickinson as secretary and treasurer, with new officers including Carroll of Barre as president and K A Hamilton of Newbsene as treasurer, followed by an annual banquet.
Concord New Hampshire March 15 Passes a settlement after a conference between quarry owners manufacturers and the International Union of workers. Labor Commissioner John B Davis presided as umpire. The agreement raises wage rates by about ten percent for duties performed with crate rates effective May first, 1920. The strike began March first after a failed demand for higher wages and continued until the agreement was reached.
Washington County Court adjourned for the weekend after completing parts of the Gomes vs. the insurance companies case. Witnesses included L Hayes for the defense and S H Jackson and Frank Philip for the plaintiff. The court will reconvene Tuesday morning to continue testimony and rulings on claim rejections.
Burlington March 11 An elm tree in Jericho was cut down with a butt diameter of about two feet and bearing roughly 700 feet of lumber. It stands as Vermont’s largest elm felled in many years, surpassing typical sizes for the species.
Nine sailors drown when the American transport Ysselhaven hits a mine and sinks. The ship, 3458 tons, was en route from Baltimore to Copenhagen. 35 survivors were landed at Hartlepool by a British steamer. Built in Rotterdam, owned by the U S Shipping Board after U.S. entry into the war.
Private Arthur Miller of Websterville near Bergy France died August 1 1918 while delivering a crucial message under heavy artillery and machine gun fire. He posthumously received the Distinguished Service Medal for extraordinary heroism. he had enlisted February 4 1918 and served in Company B 47th Infantry. He leaves parents six siblings and was a Spaulding High School alumnus.
Luther G Town longtime resident of Barre and Plainfield died suddenly at his son Dean P Towns home in Plainfield from apoplexy. He was born in Montpelier IL to James Town and Harriet Watterson and lived in East Montpelier before moving to Barre in 1906 then Plainfield. He married Laura Kidder in 185? and survived by son Dean Town and Mary Chamberlain of Portland Oregon. Funeral in Plainfield at the son's home Monday at 2 p.m. Interment in Hope Cemetery, Barre.
Deputy Marshal George F Lackey of Montpelier filed a writ in the United States court case Quaker Oat Co of Richford alleging misrepresentation in labeling of food products sent to Wentworth and Plaisted of Sanford Maine. The matter returns at the May term in Windsor Vermont. Knights of Columbus to assemble in Burlington. The annual state convention of the Kul of Co umbus is to be held here 20.
Oldsmobile guests and Vermont dealers gathered at Hotel Barre for a banquet hosted by local groups and the Barre Board of Trade. A musical program followed, then a Park Theatre tour of Oldsmobile car production and local granite quarries on a special Barre & Chelsea rail trip with sightseeing, photos, and varied anecdotes.
Spaulding high school defeated Waterbury 20 to 14 in Waterbury last night. The win puts Spaulding in position to face Montpelier for the Northern league title, likely at Morrisville on an announced date. Carpenter and McHardy starred with key shots and eight fouls apiece, while Lillie led Spaulding with two baskets.
