London reports a series of defensive lines on both banks of the Souchex near Lens have been captured by the British. In recent operations the British pushed forward more than a mile on a front of about four miles near Lens.
Paris reports German forces renewed violent assaults on the Verdun front west of Dead Man hill and on the Aisne front near Corny and Corbeny. French counterattacks reclaimed most trenches while German long range gas shells hit Dunkirk area. Meuse sector artillery remained active with hill 304 and Avecourt Wood under heavy fire.
Washington June 30 The Interstate Commerce Commission refused a 15 percent freight rate rise sought by American railroad companies while signaling possible 14 percent class-rate hikes in the eastern district. It suspended tariffs until October 28 and noted railroads’ finances look stronger than wartime fears suggested. Commissioner Harlan warned relief could come if months ahead justify it and urged better equipment and service.

The first man to fail registration on Foret street in Rutland was Ernest Hillis a young man aged about 19 claimed to be misinformed about the years included in the registration. He was arrested by Sheriff E C Fish and Deputy H R Adams at the request of New York state authorities and arraigned before United States Commissioner James Leamey. He was taken to his home in Glens Falls N Y where he was supposed to register on June 5. He will be 19 on November 11 1917 and he says he came outside the age. He was returned to New York by Deputy Sheriff B Patterson at the request of Rutland authorities.
A Boston meeting of the Newland Milk Producers' Association board votes to resist price increases until July 15 while pursuing business reforms. Officials say no milk strike will occur July 1 due to an unusual market surplus in New England, not a shortage.
New Brunswick June 30 Dr William J Condon a medical reserve corps member was indicted by the Middlesex county grand jury for the murder of John V Pit a Rutgers College graduate student found beldied on a road near Spotswood after disappearing since February He is imprisoned in Trenton after being brought back from an army training camp in Chattanooga Tennessee to face the charge.
Two automobiles carried more than a dozen young men from Montpelier to Burlington for noon examinations before the recruiting board for the quartermaster corps of the Regular Army. Among those going to Burlington were Francis Kelliher Richard Jerome ALO Theriwalt Arthie Alexander William Armstrong Richard Bailey Reneet Dilhin Myers Tuttle Martin Jerosime and Charles Daley. Molly Beals of Elm Street is taking a short vacation from work with an attorney and left town for Boston. Bedard ford Maka visited friends. Mrs H K Stockwell and Miss Terese Tiow left for Ashland N Y to visit relatives, the former to visit relatives in Reston before returning. Erroll Wilcox operator at the Playhouse left for Malone N Y, where he will visit. The hearing on the settlement of the estate of George H Moree of Waterbury is in probate court, third day, with insolvency alleged and certain Leo Graves ber A. Ad forthcoming at Waterbury and Charles H Darling of Burlington for the American Fidelity Co. Harold Jackson of Hartford formerly of the city arrived last evening for a visit with friends.

Fayston reports a new infantile paralysis case in Barre Town brings Montpelier’s total established cases to eighteen. The three new cases are in Vine Street and Main Street Hebrew family and River Street Italian family. With cinemas closed and gatherings banned, Montpelier remains unusually quiet as families flee to camps and the seashore.
In Waterbury two suspected infantile paralysis cases emerged, though none confirmed. Affected are the 8-year-old son of the Comstock family on Railroad Street and the 4-year-old daughter of Floyd Edwards on North Main Street, with a third child on North Main Street ill and suspected of spinal meningitis. A 13 year old Barre Town girl Florence Hibbard, daughter of Mrs. Carr, is the fourth infantile paralysis case. She saw a boy at Smith Stock Farm who fell ill and became sick five days later, shorter than the usual eight to fourteen day incubation. Her hips remain unaffected and her overall condition is favorable. Health officer Dr. K H Bailey says no other suspected cases are present in Barre Town, though two patients in South Harve and Websterville, including Donald McDonald 18, are doing well.
Vermont state health board warns health officers to quarantine for ten weeks all children arriving from Montpelier during the poliomyelitis outbreak. Three new cases were reported yesterday, two from Montpelier and one from Fayston. All public gatherings in Fayston are forbidden.
