British troops penetrated German positions on a 2000 yard front west and south of Oppy on the Arras front during last night’s operations, gaining the entire offensive and advancing forward as German defenses crumbled under pressure.
London confirms night offensive progress in France with gains south of the Souchez river and the town of Avion two miles south of Lens. British forces seized German forward positions on about 2000 yards, took prisoners and machine guns, and extended their front toward Oppy and south of the river. Air activity continued with several enemy planes shot down or driven from control and several Allied aircraft reported missing.
Paris reports that picked German troops launched a heavy night attack on the Verdun front near Hill 304 and Avecourt wood. Official lines say the German assault was disorganized by French artillery and gained footing only briefly at a few first line points. This morning a renewed German push on Hill 304 failed completely. German activity continued on the Aisne front with all assaults repulsed.
Paris reports two French merchant ships over one hundred tons and five smaller vessels sunk by submarines or mines in the week ending June 24. During the period there were 2 057 arrivals and sailings.
In New York on June 29 a duel followed the Boston murder of Frank Canselli who was slain by companions last Monday during a dispute over loot. The fight erupted in a west side rooming house. authorities found Canselli dead and an unconscious suspect after officers entered.
Leonard M. Wall, commissioner of accounts, urged Police Commissioner Woods to present the facts on Lieut Willem Trawne and his crew to the district attorney. Wallstein advised charging Lieuts Francis A. Stainkamy Jake J. Flasnelly and Sgt Francis Meta with perjury connected to the fourth brush of detective duress tied to Ruth Cruger’s disappearance.
June 20 reports Brazil has revoked its neutrality in the Germany United States war. The May congressional act authorized the shift as Brazil declared indifference ended when the United States entered the conflict and Germany attacked Brazil. Miss Alles Black Rich head instructor at the School for Feeble-Minded, was found dead with a throat wound in a cottage on Lake Winnisquam. Miss Elizabeth Suess and Miss Dorothy Davis were badly wounded. Merrin P. Bradford, manual training teacher, confessed and surrendered after police found the trio bound and the victim slain.
June 21 The Greek government ends diplomatic relations with Germany Austria Bulgaria and Turkey amid fear of war. The recall of Greek representatives to the central powers and their allies has been considered imminent since the government's advent to office yesterday.
Manchester June 20 verdict read after long deliberation finds Ketcham guilty of murder in the first degree in the Willian Coa tele case at Henmington fort. The jury showed little emotion as the sentence was pronounced. Defense and prosecution argued over causation and whether the crime was accidental or felonious.
Burlington on June 20 Miss Cor EB Ryan former Burlington millinery shop owner sues for 25000 damages claiming a March 1918 arson charge and jail confinement harmed her good name and engagement. Mrs Cora Tist died of heart failure at her Merrieville home yesterday evening during supper. She had recently been at Fanny Allen hospital for treatment. Survived by husband Charles Tist, mother Mrs Flora Peake, siblings and a niece. Funeral planned Sunday at 2 pm.

Barre officials met with the electric railroad to press a new franchise placing the road under public service commission oversight. Bondholders were cited as may back the plan if terms improve, while council members argued fare changes might revive patronage, officials countered that past increases did not help. The group adjourned without action, promising another meeting to consider the proposal.
