President Roosevelt defeats the old guard at the Chicago convention, hailed as party leader and preeminent figure in the Republican ranks. Strong support marks his standout show of force as delegates rally behind his leadership.

In Hurlington on Bright Street a Nine stove exploded in Morrie Browns home last night. Mire Ann nit suffered severe burns as flames spread to her clothing. Three physicians deemed her condition critical. Fire brigade reported no property damage. Tonight at nine, prizes and a dog rack draw will take place at the home.
Alumni Day and Class Day events unfold amid news of the Kuselan army retreat toward Liao-Yang after two days of combat at Hatcheng. Kuropatkin arrives with reinforcements but Japanese forces push back the retreating forces. Tonight features an annual prize speaking at Opera House, with graduation activities tomorrow for the class of 1904.
A city steam roller set off a crash at the South Main and Prospect corner this forenoon. Loren Webster of Bellows Valle ene and his wife, guests of EL Perry, were thrown from their carriage but unharmed. Webster’s horse grew unmanageable, colliding with Miles’ team. the Webster carriage top tore off, office wagon wheel twisted, horse bumped, and both sides avoided serious injuries.
William Howard, longtime Barre resident and farmer, died last evening at his daughter Mrs Arthur Bugeil s home on Park Street aged 68 years and five months. He had lived in Barre nearly a year and was not a member of any order, attended Presbyterian church regularly. Survived by his daughter, one brother in Ada, New York. Funeral Thursday afternoon at Crowe Bis late home with F A Poole officiating. burial in Hope Cemetery.
Wil Stowe’s 14 year old son from Walnut Street vanished after returning home with a stamped payment receipt but no signature. The mother suspected foul play when the boy did not appear later. Police alerted Burlington Waterbury Northfield and other towns. A sighting near Waterbury station was reported but no solid trace exists.
Washington June 20 Enthusiastic Republican caucus elected delegates to Chelsea county convention with four to senator two for Dickey and two for Downing for sheriff George Downing. Delegates named include Ten Hutcheon Seaver A F Donohon S Emery and others.
A school ceremony at Sobled Chapel featured an audience friendly program with flowers and a purple and white class banner. Mark R. Beery led the event praising education and recalling American wars, with solo performances by Grace Make, Ile Klunghe Batebeliee, Grace Edith Brown, and a strong vocal by a soloist.
Friends gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs James Harvey on the East Montpelier road to celebrate the 21st wedding anniversary. The evening included a welcome, gifts of a silver napkin ring, a box of oranges, towels, and $7.50 in money. Mrs Fred Hayden spoke, Mrs Garvey assisted, and cake and lemonade were served.
Attorney M. G. wed from Richmond last evening where he was called an official business relative to the arrest of Almond J. Hall who skipped the town last fall is said with a lot of other people's feet in this pocket. Hall returned to the village Friday evening, was seen by the officials, and was arrested, giving himself up quietly. Hall was a trusted employee of the Richmond Light and Power Company last fall and held a responsible position through which much money passed.
Langdon street barber Montpetier Allard was kicked in the face while driving yesterday in Montpelier. The blow broke his nose and crushed his forehand as the dog slipped under control. He was taken to Heaton hospital for treatment.
The only child of Mr and Mrs Mee of Sheldon, Lew, a 21 month old named Oakley Jawas, drowned Sunday afternoon when the child fell over the edge of a kettle near the family home. The parents were milking when it occurred. Dr Powers arrived but could not revive the child.
A reception will be given to honor the 2 ork tron of the Grad Chapter of Vermont, Mrs Allda Mt Dunham, and the distriat grand FP, Dunham. The event, held at the Masonic 1 Wednesday evening, June ud at 8 o'clock, will feature good music and refreshments. Members of the chapter are invited to attend for a social evening.
Funeral services for Mrs A C Brown were held this afternoon with Rev J Edward Wright officiating. Pallbearers included Fred Blanchard A C Blanchard A Howland Whitman Ferrie and K E Peck.
The Co operation store plans an evening event and W Averthan acquired a Reliance touring car. Shop stewards are asked to visit the secretary P F McCarthy to obtain the Quarry Wors Journal. William Marehall reports a pocket picked on a local train last night.
An excerpted reading of a Vermont school event recalls Harry Hepa and Betty A, with Miax Bite and piano solos. Arthur Stewart of Lyndonville introduces speakers, and Elsa L. Clapp and Dean Seaver are named among organizers. The program closes with a class song by Blanche Baschelder and Grace Edith Brown, benediction by the Reverend Bradley, and a final cheer from the audience.
The annual Commencement concert by Goddard Seminary pupils of local and instrumental departments filled the chapel last evening. Despite stifling heat, the audience enjoyed strong vocal solos by Miss Jennie Mann Miss Grace Brown and John Angus and praised the overall music program and departmental management.
An Alamoal association meeting and exercises were held at 1080 this morning with a small turnout. President Frank Williams presided, prayers by Rev A M Smith, and solos by Gertrude Bush and Susie Harding Chase. Willem Wiehart delivered the oration on Progress, stressing individual duty and education as drivers of advancement. A trio sang by Worenos Atlee and Helen Hurtland, Browning poem read by Mrs Averill, and benediction by Rev Smith closed the program. Dinner followed in the union hall.
Twin City baseball fans get a preview as five Barre Montpelier league players arrive for practice ahead of the season. The squad will be joined by Dreaver and Sheldon, with sprinkling of the diamond to improve the grounds. A public practice Thursday and Friday at four o clock offers fans a chance to see the lineup before the league opener. Admission one cent.

Veterans begin to gather for the seventh annual Washington County Veteran's Association reunion at Dewey Park. Mayor Barclay of Barre and Mayor Corry of Montpellar will give welcomes tomorrow afternoon around 1 o clock. A grand campfire is planned in the evening with speakers including Capt P F Abesergh Montpellar. Meetings continue Thursday with officer elections in the forenoon and an experience program in the afternoon.
Supt of Streets Alex Simoe injured his right ankle yesterday afternoon when slipping on a street surface while attempting to mount a vehicle. The ankle was dislocated and limbs were damaged. Drs Raid and Derel attended, setting the ankle and applying a pinaster cast. Brose will be unable to use the fork vine.
Mrs Georgiana Moras of Spaulding Street woke at 1 AM to find a shed door forced open and the intruder fleeing. She turned on lights and pursued but the culprit escaped as the door had been opened.
