London reports rumors of a serious Spanish movement with papers speculating a push to draw Spain into the war. Officials say no solid news, with emphasis on domestic crisis and army reform demands rather than foreign aggression.
Paris reports that the transport Amnam was torpedoed on June 11 while under escort in the Tonian seas. It was towed by a convoy ship but sank within hours. there were no casualties, according to official announcements.
Washington June 16 a five per cent tax on net profits of all newspaper and magazine publishers was added to the war tax bill by the Senate finance committee. The measure aims to raise about 15 million dollars and was approved by a one vote margin as members were absent. A motion by Senator Penrose to reconsider may come Monday. The committee also voted to repeal the draw allowance to sugar refiners, expected to add 19 million dollars in revenue. The panel adjourned until Monday with more work anticipated on the bill.

Officers and troopers struggled to disperse the mob as they attempted to arrest 26 men suspected of lacking registration cards. The crowd surged around the hall and the guardsmen fired revolvers to drive them into side streets.
Washington June 16 The national military registration roll neared nine million with 44 states and the District of Columbia posting 4,898,611. Massachusetts Kentucky Montana and Wyoming yet to report, census estimates suggest totals surpass nine and a half million as heat and cold reactions shape public health notes and advice on foot care and comfort.

Fred Brouillard was struck by a vehicle operated by Alex Hulburd on the lower span to Winooski near his home. He suffered a skull fracture and a broken shoulder, was taken to Mary Fletcher hospital, and officials said he could not survive.

A Barre telegram announced the death of Peter W. Mutch of Darro at Phoenix Arizona after a period of illness. George Mutch sent word from Phoenix on May 16 that his brother was deteriorating, with Mrs Mutch having gone to Phoenix last December. The remains will be brought to Barre, expected to arrive Saturday.
Rutland June 16 A search for 14 year old Mary White ended with her discovery in Rutland city after she and Edna Vosburg aged 17 traveled from Northampton Massachusetts, spending weeks in Vermont, Albans, Swanton and Winook in a run away episode. The two girls used false names and ages and faced charges for moral conduct. Mary White was returned to her mother after paying a fine. Edna Vosburg and Mary White initially left home April 21.
A man who gave the name George Tar ehis aged 21 and occupation valeyman cod manufacturer registered at the Montpelier county clerk for military papers. He was referred by Mrs. L. C. Moody to the sheriff and then to the Adjutant General, with U S Marshal George Lackey and U S commissioner H. C. Shortier taking up the case for further investigation. Tarshis claimed May registration but officials kept him held until a trade could be arranged.
In Middlebury on June 16 the Addison county court heard the alienation case of Rockwood versus Walcrtt for $5000. Attorneys argued over jury timing and charges as the case stretched since Tuesday morning, with the jury reportedly rezoning at 260 and returning a verdict of not guilty.

Four Barre financial institutions completed returns showing 2 509 subscribers and a total Barre subscription of 425 000 dollars for the Liberty Loan. The Barre average subscription stood at 165 dollars with some funds raised earlier or via other channels. A late subscription of 100 dollars came from the carpenters union.

After a 2 1/2 hour jury deliberation in State versus Mrs Aurelio Villa, a city court found her guilty of illegally selling liquor. Foreman William McDonald announced the verdict at 4:30 pm, with sentence reserved for 2 pm today. Defense may file motions. exceptions possible. Witnesses included Robert Heaphy and Josephine Rice. Villa was defended by R A Hoar and A G Fay.
Harold W. Slocum director of the Vermont Co of the workety and Rev. Paul D. Mendy chaplain of the Vermont infantry will speak at the mass meeting in Barre Opera House at eight o clock. Public invited and a large audience expected.
