The first contingent of American officers under Major General Pershing arrived in Paris this morning. The arrival occurred without formalities as the staff begins duties abroad amid ongoing Allied preparations in London and Paris.
Barre prepares a city-wide canvass to boost Liberty Bond subscriptions as Barre trails its quota. Canners will visit every family today and tomorrow urging bond purchases while staff officers organize safe, robust support for American forces and the bond drive. A Conservative club vote commits $104 of funds to Liberty bonds and officers plan extensive preliminary work. In London, King George hosts Pershing’s party officers and invited soldiers for palace visits.
London reports by the war office that British forces have pushed forward further south of Messines in a new advance. The bulletin states Austrian attacks have been broken down, marking continued progress for Allied troops.
Washington June 11 official Italian cabinet reports say Austrian counter offensive collapsed. Italian forces held Falte and Jamiano against heavy attacks in the Carso where 150000 Austrians and 2000 big guns were used. Italy deployed mobile machine gun units detached from infantry to exploit mountains.
Paris reports active artillery fighting north of the Somme river last night. The war office says a German raid west of Cerny was repulsed.
Petrograd via London June 1 Energetic support of the provisional government by Cossacks has been pledged by their delegate to the Congress of Present? M. Kuban. The Cossacks recognized only one authority the provisional government and would not tolerate undermining of its aims by separate groups and individuals.
In a Berlin interview published Saturday Prime Minister Radoslavoff stated Bulgaria has no intention of extending the war into Greece. He claimed Bulgaria could mount an offensive against General Sarrail but chose not to pursue war in that direction.
An admiralty official said last night that reconnaissance off Ostend shows all enemy ships have left. The Dover view-admiral reports destroyers moved toward safety after damage from the recent raids. The harbor looks deserted and the basin shows removal of vessels.
London June 11 John Redmond will be invited to nominate five members of the Irish convention. Sir John Leesdale and William Brien will also nominate members. Ten Irish delegates, five Sinn Feiners and fifteen government nominees are planned with a government preference for a chairman and other key posts.
Holland June 11 three men died in a gas tank explosion at a local store. Merle Wheeler 41 Harry Wheeler 27 and Eugene L Gray 60 were filling the tank when it blew. The two older men died instantly, Wheeler died four hours later. Gray survived by wife three sons and a daughter. A double funeral for the Wheeler brothers is set for 10 tomorrow, Gray to be buried at 4.
London report states the American sailing vessel Magnus Manson was torpedoed by a German submarine off the French coast. The crew abandoned ship and were later rescued, with private advices confirming the sinking after the crew left the vessel.
Dublin via London June 11 Police Inspector Mills fatally injured while stopping a protest meeting over Irish rebels imprisonments. He died at a hospital. Several Sinn Feiners arrested. 2000 protesters clashed outside Liberty Hall despite orders from Lieutenant General Mahon. Mills was struck by a stone and collapsed. assailant not arrested.
E P Pate resigns as secretary of state over conscription policy amid a rift with Sir Robert Borden. Sevigny rumored to resign as well as discussions of a union administration failing, with reconstructions to stay within the Conservative party. The compulsion bill debate is expected to be long and bitter before passage.
Sir Thomas Lipton entertained at his country seat yesterday afternoon the Chicago Red Cross unit of 30 surgeons and 45 nurses. Prof Richard P Strong Harvard and Dr Castellani, Italian bacteriologist, joined in combating the typhus plague in Serbia. Maj Gen Pershing and staff spent the day at Castle Hever with Lord Astor and other officers, then attended a reception at James Dunning's home. The American soldiers enjoyed a Thames excursion arranged by the committee.
New York June 1 A conditional gift of 1 000 000 from Cleveland H chairman of the finance committee of the Red Cross war council toward the 100 000 000 Red Cross war fund was announced here The offer was not made public but the extensive committees said it was felt to be real The donor believes the fund requires subscriptions from individuals or corporations at about 1800000 each We have several other gifts in sight that will rank with this donation
Washington, D. C., June 11. The Senate naval affairs committee heard that confidential information of the Bureau of Ordnance may have been divulged by a spy or traitor. Letters produced by Senator Freylinghuysen suggested material obtainable only from ordnance files. Secretary Daniels urged transferring the papers to the Secret Service as he pursued the matter.
Philadelphia June 11 Theodore Roosevelt spoke at memorial services for railroad workers and railway telegraphers urging a new army on the democratic model. He called for universal service with officer promotion for the fittest, regardless of class, and stressed disciplined duty while rejecting social divisions. He criticized unpreparedness and wartime missteps, warning the nation must face harsh facts without delay.
Raymond Schoolcraft, 41, of Hardwick, died at St. Johnsbury hospital after convulsions in his jail cell. He had been brought from Hardwick with Albert Perley and had refused sleep medicine earlier. Schoolcraft and Perley were serving two day terms. Schoolcraft will be removed to Rutland to serve his term.

Funeral services were held for Dr Ransel W Warner a longtime St Johnsbury dentist who died after four weeks illness Burial took place at Mt Pleasant cemetery He practiced from 1869 to shortly before his death born November 6 1853 in Mount Holly He married Eunice L Gods five children and a granddaughter survived by two sons Charles Wy and Fred E Warner and five grandchildren Emma M Warner Hazel Warner Ethel Warner and others
E Peverelli aged, after a winter illness of bronchitis, died in Bilivton Bay. The obituary notes his long service and connection to the Liberty Loan bond drive, with brief remarks on his character and contributions to the community.
Lord Northcliffe, head of Britain's war mission, lands at an Atlantic port aboard the St Paul to work with American industry and economy in support of the British cause. He will cooperate with Captain Andee Tardieu, the French high commissioner in the United States, on this mission.
James Giidici a well known Barre resident and former granite worker died after a brief illness. He was born in Saltrio Italy and lived in Barre over 22 years working as a granite cutter and later in manufacturing with his family. Funeral services will be held at his brother Frank Giudici’s home on Heckley Street Wednesday at 2 PM, with interment in Hope Cemetery. He leaves brothers Frank and Desiderio and was beloved in the Italian community.
Grand Juror William Wishart led complaints as Mrs Aurelio Villa and her husband were arrested this afternoon by Deputy Chief Harry Gamble at their Berlin street home on charges of selling intoxicating liquor without authority. They were jailed and await Friday hearing at 9, each posting bail of 500. The Villas appeared without counsel. A prior conviction for the woman on an unrelated charge and a 300 fine plus costs followed a disclosure by several Graniteville youths.
Barre residents express strong protest at the B and M Railroad decision to remove the 12 20 am night train to Boston. Supt Folsom of the Passumpsic division says he will visit Barre to hear local statements amid appreciation for the service and belief the move is unfair to Barre.
Josuph A. Davis of Wellesley Mass has been chosen to succeed Dr. Martin G. Benedict as principal of St Johnsbury Academy after more than a decade of service by Benedict. Davis, Bowdoin graduate, was presented by John J. Thoms of Middlebury College as the new leader. He addressed seniors at Orleans school and Lyndon Institute graduates in the afternoon.
At a special meeting of the city council Saturday, Henry Alexander of Branch Street was appointed to fill the vacancy in the sixth ward caused by A. J. Krive’s resignation. The council confirmed the appointment 4 to 1. Mayor Gleason also nominated Alderman A. J. Milne to succeed Alderman Bruce as chair of the street committee, a confirmation that followed a vote. Alexander was named to multiple committees, becoming partner on charities health, license, library, and cemetery lighting committees. The property committee was instructed to install reflector lights on town property while a lighting and waste regulation order was issued. The D. M. Miles Coal Co. received permission to install a gasoline pump on Smith Street.
