One hundred fifty men are dead and no hope is held out for recovery of 200 others trapped by fire in Spectacular mine near Butts Montana. Of 425 men in the mine when the fire started more than two thirds are unaccounted for. Twelve bodies have been recovered.
Washington June 9 Slow progress to date in the revision of the war revenue bill by the Senate finance committee has been made. It seemed probable today that the measure would not be completed until towards the end of next week. The committee hoped to finish the task today. Rates on sugar and publishers taxes were still before the committee for final settlement.
Foreign Secretary Balfour arrived at a British port this morning returning from America at the head of the British mission. He immediately left for London, arriving in the afternoon. Paris reports an additional American flotilla of destroyers and patrol boats to cooperate with French forces in the English Channel and the Atlantic, with naval bases prepared to accommodate the ships.

The Pittsford railroad station was totally destroyed early Friday morning by a fire likely sparked by lightning. The blaze consumed the building and the coal elevator owned by T. R. Willis, with little freight or express stored inside. Nearby telephone poles and cross pieces were burned for about a quarter mile, and the night watchman reported two other small blazes nearby but could not reach the main fire in time.
Paris reports four fruitless German attacks along the Chemin Des Dames last night north of Cerny. British forces under Sir Douglas Haig repelled counter attacks near Messines Wytschaete ridge, while overrun Germans suffered heavy losses and many prisoners, including 152 officers, were taken. Crown Prince Rupprecht ordered renewed push northwest of Oosttaverne and east of Messines, but British artillery and infantry held.

London dispatch reports the British steamer Southland torpedoed without warning on June 4 while bound from Liverpool to Philadelphia in ballast. Among six Americans aboard, Edward Ney of New York City is missing. A gun crew fired ten shots. a second torpedo hit the vessel causing a magazine explosion that killed eight. Forty crewmen disappear, leaving 160 aboard to be landed. The U boat commander cited spying as reason for surprise over advance notice.

London June 9 The British war cabinet has decided to permit MacDonald and Arthur Henderson on Labourites to travel to Petrograd on a special request of the Russian poet Lord Cecil announced in the House of Commons yesterday. He said a passport would be exacted from the participants to join the German conference.

Baltimore Federal League clubs sue organized baseball for discrimination in a $1,000 suit set for Philadelphia on June 11. The complaint, over seventy five pages, charges Sherman and Clayton antitrust violations and lists numerous defendants including National League, American League, James A. Gilmore, Charles Evergham and Harry Sinclair. Prominent counsel from Philadelphia, Baltimore and elsewhere represent both sides as they prepare for a high profile legal battle over peace terms from 1915.
The Montpelier Choral Society closed its 1017 minurie fratival with a concert at Montpelier City Hall. Soloists Murphy Morrisey Mestre Murphy Ferguson Alexander and the chorus offered excerpts from the oratorio and performed Rossini and Handel arias. The program featured a finale of Elekberg’s To Thee Counte and a stirring Liberty loan appeal by Rev. A D Bradford. The audience, chorus and soloists joined in The Star Spangled Banner to conclude.
Rev W Parkyn Jackson of St Albans has accepted a post with the national committee of public safety to manage betterment work for U S Army training camps. He is ordered to report for duty at Port Niagara on Monday. Jackson, son of the late Rev Dr Sands, formerly pastored in Barre and East Barre, and connected with Stranahan Memorial work.

Mrs. James Levie wife of James Levie of St Hill street died at home Friday at 8 15 after several days illness. Born in Aberdeen Scotland August 19 1864 she had been a resident here many years. Her son James Levie Jr works at Granite Bank. Surviving are two daughters Wilhelmina and Gladys, two sisters Mrs J A Ushan of Boston and Mrs Phamia Cruickshank of Scotland, three brothers William George Cruickshank of Aberdeen and Alec Cruickshanks. Funeral service at 2 00 Monday at First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev Ailgur Crosland. Interment Tape cemetery. The family requests no flowers.
Spaulding high school begins its annual commencement week with a prize speaking program in the opera house. The city plans closing exercises June 16 with a largest graduating class of 92. The class day and commencement programs feature student speeches, music, and the address by Dartmouth professor James L. McConaughy.
A company detail from Fort Ethan Allen arrived in Barre for a recruiting drive. Eight to ten soldiers in khaki detrained at Central Vermont station and pitched tents on the green. Local committees and the Vincitia club welcomed them as a recruiting campaign unfolds with speeches, music, posters, and a coordinating dance with Red Cross refreshments.
Barre has subscribed to 182,100 of Liberty bonds leaving 238,000 still to raise with five business days left. A house to house canvass will begin next week to boost subscriptions, with Bent on securing as many bonds as possible. A regional Liberty loan committee was formed with ward captains and workers assigned to duties to mobilize support.
Magistrate H W Scott sentenced Joe Bennett Bancroft to six months to two years in the Rutland house of correction for house of correction acts with a five month minimum and a 20 dollar fine. Barcroft received a 74 day county jail term and fines or costs. Bennett’s wife had begun a separate sentence for keeping a disorderly house.
