Belfast reports a warm welcome for King Edward and Queen Alexandra as they arrive in Ulster’s capital. The city is decorated and crowded with sightseers, while streets are lined by a police contingent and military units to ensure order during the royal progress.
In Rome on July 28 the first of three requiem masses for Leo was celebrated in the Sistine Chapel. Cardinal Serafino Vannutelli presided with Cardinal Adilardi Vincenzo Vannutelli Satolli and Riccard in attendance along with nearly all cardinals and Vatican officials. The ceremony was described as splendid and incense filled the chapel as crowds of reverent observers looked on. The State vs Alex Glinny in Washington County Court recalls his discharge from Gill and Company granite works after being found guilty of misconduct. Glinny paid a $250 fine and refused a proposed settlement to liquidate part of the fine. Gill and Co. warned removal of him from their sheds and he reportedly threatens suit for damages.
The Rev. Lynn P. Armstrong, a Brooklyn pastor, brings fifteen destitute women and children to a Bennington farm for a three week stay. A cook and manager accompany the party while Armstrong oversees welfare as mothers and children enjoy fresh milk butter and countryside in a new experience away from city life.
John D. Miller a prominent Rutland County figure dies suddenly at his Wallingford home at 3 AM from heart failure. He served as state railroad commissioner for two terms, was vice president and director of Rutland County National Bank, trustee of Marble Savings Bank, and director of Proctor Trust Company, with significant real estate holdings in Duluth and other western cities.
The Reliance is chosen to defend the America's Cup after today’s race with Constitut and Colombia. The decision was announced by the New York club challenge committee and the Bellanca was selected as defender. Commodore Bourne and Messrs Forbes Cormack and Robinson of the cup committee were involved.
Mount Washington records a rare July cold spell with the thermometer at 10 degrees at 1 am and three inches of snow. A seventy mile gale disabled telephones and telegraph services and blocked the Crawford Notch road by fallen trees and impassable conditions.
E L Smith and company plan to buy the entire machining plant formerly occupied by Barclay Bros at Granite Street. The sale includes a large steam engine two steam boilers two air compressors six polishing wheels a boom derrick and piping. Rumors say Smiths may expand at Burnham’s Meadow with further additions. Barclay Brothers have grown Mackie plant.
Evidence is being submitted in the water damages case Smith Whitcomb Cook vs Barre Water Co at the city court before Special Master Joel H Mak er Baker. The suit seeks damages for water used in polishing mills and covers water drawn from Peck pond Scottbrook and rail branch. This morning concerned preliminaries and testimony began this afternoon. Attorneys Frank J. Martin and BR M Harvey appear for Smith Whitcomb Cook, with J W Gordon for Barre Water Co.
William Raycroft a well known Northfield resident died early today from a hemorrhage of the lungs after a brief decline in health. He served in Company B Sixth Vermont as private and earned a first lieutenant promotion before mustering out in 1865. He leaves a son Ayecott of a tre and a canes and Louise Raycroft of Fair Haven. Funeral arrangements are not yet set.
Montpelier July 25. In I A Bowman’s store two men entered and demanded he stop selling stationery by the trusts. Bowman declined the proposition and pointed to the door, saying he would conduct his business without assistance.
At a meeting attended by E. J. Morgan of the Columbia and Aggust Belmont of the Constitution, Reliance is favored as the fastest, with hopes toward Bristol overhaul before a New Hochel race. The trio sailed a windward leeward course at 15 knot NW, Reliance first, Constitution second, Columbia close behind. A shift in wind later let Constitution gain while Columbia fell back astern.
Communication with Jackson was cut off as poles blew down in a storm. Winds damaged infrastructure and disrupted service this afternoon, leaving residents without landline contact and power in some areas.
The first meeting of Cairo temple Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, chartered at the Imperial County meeting at Sara toga July 6, will be held in Rutland between September 1 and 15. The event is described as one of the biggest Shriner gatherings in the state with a large class of candidates for the degree and elaborate degree work.

Barre to Burlington excursion sails on the steamer Chateaugay for a five hour trip among Lake Champlain’s north islands ending at St. Albans bay. Leaves Barre 7 10 p m and Montpelier 7 20 p m with return from Burlington at 5 p m. Tickets include rail and steamer ride with prices 1 25 for adults and 6 cents for children.
Montpelier July 27 City Sheriff arrested a man about 90 who gave the name Jerry BE on a warrant by the state's attorney charging begging and lack of visible means. He pleaded guilty in city court and was sentenced to not less than 75 days in the Rutland house of correction, to be taken there Tuesday.
Rathind railroad engineer Kesigne Rutland July 27. C. J. Parker chief engineer of Intland railroad tendered his resignation to take effect August 1. He held the post 18 months and will join the engineering staff of the New York Central with headquarters in New York.

In Montpelier court yesterday Michael Casa of Berlin drew 10 days in jail for intoxication. John J. Adams of Burlington was fined 15.70 and jailed 10 days for unpaid fines. State vs Robert a larceny and State vs R J my intoxication were scheduled for August 5 and a breach of the peace case from May 16 led to 72 days in Rutland after nonpayment. other cases were disposed.
George Whither charged with larceny released. The case against C Whitsher charged with larceny from the fees store of Arch Baieh elder at Plaingeld not pressed in city court today. The ae jury may take up the case at its September term.
A meeting is scheduled this week at TAG. A Ironalde serves as cor and secretary, with details announced for attendees and officials.
A large crowd attended St. Monica's Church for a requiem in mourning Pope Leo XIII. Fr. P. M. McKenna delivered the eulogy, aided by visiting pastors, with Knights of Columbus, Ladies Altar Society, and other groups present. The service featured black and white decorations, solemn choiring, and reflections on Leo XIII as a worldwide spiritual leader.
The Barre railroad delivered stone from KR. E. Smith & Co. quarries for a spire stone egg sized 6.0 by 8.00018 weighing 4712. The stone was moved to Jones aber seta for eating buge from the sanctuary and left until morning measuring 11.813 by 1L6. It will be sent to Greatoom Heckstt Co to be cut.
School commissioners met last evening and opened bids for a new grammar school. Five bids were submitted but all were rejected as too high. A meeting is planned for tonight. Muslin underwear sale advertised at Abbot's.
