Rioting in Washington DC reaches new heights with casualties rising as police and troops struggle to control mobs. An eighth assault on white women by black men in two weeks heightens fear while authorities consider federal troop deployment to restore order.
In Washington July 24 members of Congress urged President Wilson to declare martial law amid race riots and crime wave. Resolutions by Representatives Clark Morida and Vail called for troop deployment to restore order as rioting caused multiple deaths and numerous injuries with dozens of suspects in custody.
The international demonstrative strike yesterday did not scale up in major cities. Deputy Torat reports the general strike remnant has been completely cleared and there were no widespread actions. The details arrive from Rome and mention various names in a fragmented report.
Washington July 22 The Senate foreign relations committee adopted a Knox resolution asserting that until the peace treaty is ratified no power exists to execute its provisions. The measure passed without a record vote after prior division on whether to substitute the Knox proposal. He may stay at times in bed depending on his day and planned to attend morning meetings. Earlier he had postponed duties due to an acute intestinal attack after a weekend trip down the Potomac.

Hartford July 22. About 400 to 600 of Underwood company workers are on strike leading to a noon shutdown of the Hartford plant. Hourly employees who return by July 31 will receive half pay during the shutdown. Polishers, glazers, and grinders are out, delaying the finishing of machines. Bonuses of 10 percent weekly and a 10 percent wage raise for July 31 returners are cited, with no change to hours. The plant’s profit sharing continues despite the strike and union leaders declined comment as they meet to discuss the situation.

Wadelphia July 2 Ralph T Moyer cashier of the North Penn bank surrendered today to the district attorney after a warrant was issued. The bank closed Friday owing more than 2 000 000 to depositors and the receiver reports a 900 000 shortage. The arrest warrant was sworn by State Bank Commissioner Ferguson. He faces charges including perjury embezzlement rehypothecation falsifying books and falsifying accounts.
Henry Fletcher, American ambassador to Mexico, told the House rules committee that about 50 Americans had been slain in Mexico over three years without prosecutions. He warned that withdrawing recognition of Carranza would worsen turmoil and stated he could not name a revolutionary leader capable of stable government.
Washington July 22 Republican House leaders, after informal talks, will call a party caucus likely Friday to consider enlarging the legislative steering committee by two or four members. Four nominees will be presented: Anderson Minnesota Nolan California Stemp Virginia and Heavily Nebraska.
The funeral for Clinton Paquin of 119 Hill Street, who died at Barre City Hospital from injuries while operating the city stone crusher, was held yesterday at 2 pm from his home. Rev. James Ramage officiated. bearers were six local coworkers. Floral tributes came from friends and out of town relatives, including John Barrett and Mrs William Shepard.
Washington July 22 Senator Moses Republican of New Hampshire warns the United States would face European turmoil for years if it accepts a principal power role under the peace treaty. He argues the treaty's terms are perilous and would entangle the U S in vast obligations. The Gaety lab group met last night and decided to continue their duties after successful settlements.
Mount Clemens mid July report on Henry Ford testifying in a libel suit against the Chicago Daily Tribune. Attorney Elliott G Stevenson pressed Ford on anti war munition manufacturing and loans while Ford answered yes or no, resisting recollection of submarine outrages and Lusitania remarks. Pathor Riley officiated the quiet wedding of Eleanor Croteau daughter of Ly Croteau of Montpelier to a groom who recently returned from France where he served as a corporal. The ceremony at St Muniews was followed by a reception and the couple will reside on Berlin Street Montpelier.
Maj. Gen. Joseph T. Dickman arrived in Burlington yesterday to visit his family. Former commander of the 2d Cavalry at Fort Ethan Allen, he led the American occupation forces in Germany after the armistice and commanded the Tet arty corps during the Argonne battles. He will stay in Burlington for about a month.
Lieutenant Colonel Samuel T. Ansell, former acting judge advocate general, had his resignation accepted by Secretary Maker and is now retained as counsel for the Special House War Investigation Committee in its probe of War Department expenditures abroad. Representative Johnson of South Dakota announces Ansell will advise the committee on legal matters.
