Allied reports state 15,000 Germans were captured in a significant offensive. Total German casualties are estimated around 60,000. French forces shifted to advance toward Peronne and seized a trench line east of Curlu, tightening the front.
British repulsed German infantry near Thiepval after heavy bombardment as 15 000 prisoners and 60 000 German losses are reported in the Anglo French offensive. French seize a line east of Curlu and take Sormont farm facing Cloy, with advance toward Peronne along the Somme north bank.
Berlin reports continuous fighting with Allied forces on both sides of the Somme since last night. The official statement says the Allies have not yet gained any serious advantages.

A man named Elmer Coffrin died after harnessing a horse in the yard of Harry Harvey in Waterbury this morning. Life was extinct when Dr. Goodrich arrived. Coffrin had been ill and under a physician's care. He was born in Waterbury and survived by wife Elizabeth Ryan, a daughter Evaline, a sister Mia Moody, and a brother Henry Coffrin. Funeral is set for Friday at St Andrews church. Also reported: Robert Traverse, aged around 40, died returning home from work in Montreal, buried in Holy Cross cemetery. Traverse left five sisters and two daughters, including Phillips of Waterbury and James Traverse of Waterbury. Washington reports currency board issues a call for edition of information hacks.
A journalist reports the discovery of Mine Margeret Ward’s body in a car with six men including former State Representative Charles Cannell near Peilanty. Police arrested the group for allegedly being accessories to a legal median practice. The body was identified by Sergeant Differ, sister-in-law of the homeowner. All suspects were later released on bail.
In drizzle at Newport the Weat Derby and Memphremagog Driving clubs staged the celebration with many features canceled by rain. Price winners include Mrs Louis Lamond first for ladies single drivers and B F Moore Co. winning several divisions with J A Gendron and E BeauLieu placing in others.
Two fires struck Montpelier on the Fourth of July evening. A barn on Berths street and a timber pile on Winooski Avenue caught fire, one from a cracker suspected to be tossed into a stall and another believed to be set with kerosene. Firefighters battled the blazes for hours, but only minor damage was reported and a horse escaped unharmed.
Oscar Potter of Opeek road lies in Rutland hospital in serious condition after a fall at home. He was found unconscious on the kitchen floor by Leo Shelves who carried him to the couch and alerted medical aid.

In Framingham Massachusetts on July 4 William Haller a steeplejack filled a giant cracker with dynamite to burn it into the street when it exploded badly injuring his right hand and another man Clattare Bell the incident also harmed Halley’s brother both men were taken to a local drug store for treatment.
Mrs Mabel Bruce of No 14 Depot Square was arraigned before Magistrate H W Scntt on a charge of keeping a disreputable house. She pleaded not guilty and bail of 400 was furnished. A hearing is set for July 12 at 9 oclock. Police probed gatherings at her rooms and secured several names for potential testimony.
South Wheelock July celebration at the old red schoolhouse drew more than 100 attendees with band concerts forenoon and afternoon contests. Teams from St Johnsbury and Wheelock plus London and other nearby towns performed in a lively hall dance to close the event.

Randall’s condition described as improving slowly after admission to Menchriet hospital.
Montpelier last evening erupted in a knife attack after a dispute at Parte street. Peter Juice and Kernest Hulett were involved. Mulett, an escort, and a bystander were assaulted. Chief Connelly arrested Ruisk on charges of assault with intent to kill after a police hunt.
