In St. Petersburg on January 22, police dispersed crowds marking the 1905 Bloody Sunday anniversary. Demonstrators declared a general strike and marched with bands and revolutionary songs. Several were arrested and property damage was reported as tension flared between workers and police.
Washington reports Baron Nobuaki Makino, Japan's foreign minister, told Parliament that Japan sees the need for other solutions after US replies to protests over California alien land laws. He noted the third protest note to Secretary Bryan remains unanswered, and outlined steps between Chinda and U.S. officials. New Haven Conn Jan 22 Charles H Murray of Holyoke Mass Magman of the Bar Harbor express pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the North Haven wreck last September which killed two. Judge Milton A Shumway deferred sentence. Murray admitted failing to signal properly causing the White Mountain train to strike the stopped Bar Harbor train. Other defendants Adams and Miller faced charges and trials were pending.
Portland Maine January 22 crew of the missing five masted schooner Prescott Palmer were picked up by a steamer and landed at Bermuda today, per a cablegram from Captain Jorge A. Carliste master of the Palmer. The schooner was abandoned during a storm last week. casualty list includes one steamer, seven schooners and one barge with one life lost so far.
The Boston & Maine railroad faces a proposed reorganization under a recent state act, allowing bonds totaling up to 53 313 521, double its current stock value. With 43 998 000 in bonds outstanding and 27 000 000 due soon, commissioners favor a negotiated plan including separating the Boston & Maine from the New Haven system while keeping the Fitchburg Railroad.
The New York state realized a profit exceeding 3.1 million dollars from the sale of an 851 million dollar issue of four and one half percent gold non tax state highway and canal bonds. The entire issue was bought by a Kuhn Loeb & Co and W A Read & Co syndicate at a price near 1006,000,000. The Kuhn Loeb Read bid on an all or none basis produced a net premium far above other bids. A rival offer from Harris Forbes Co led a New York syndicate at 106,537,000.
In New York on June 22 Samuel Berman, previously arraigned for pocket picking, faced Judge Nott again. A woman with four children wept as the court, moved by past mercy, suspended sentence and collected $100 for the family. Yesterday Berman appeared again, accused of a similar offense, and was sentenced to not less than five nor more than seven years in Sing Sing, with the wife and children reportedly hired for the occasion.
A rumor from St. Paul dated January 22 reports a serious Great Northern railroad wreck near Pembina North Dakota with 40 killed. Officials offered no confirmation and expressed doubt about the report’s accuracy.
Charles K Hamilton, famed aviator known for flying from New York to Philadelphia and back, died at his home today at age 28 from an internal hemorrhage after his wife heard groaning and summoned a physician. He began with kite and dirigible flights before pursuing air travel.

Stowe reports a prayer service for Mrs Jane A Gloyd who died Tuesday after heart trouble. The body will go to Richmond for a Congregational church funeral Friday. She was 73, born in Dalton, lived much of her life in Richmond and Jericho, and had been with her step daughter since May. Her maiden name was Hinkson. She married Joseph Stockwell, later wed Desae Glovd of Richmond, who died nine years ago.
Rutland officials and State's Attorney B L Stafford seek blame for the accidental death of William Hubbard aged 66 whose body lay on Woodstock avenue Friday night. A theory held he fell and was run over by a vehicle. A man, Thomas Corconn aged 25, was jailed for intoxication after driving recklessly. He retained lawyers Thomas M H Browne and J Dyer Spellman.
Harriet Newell Thompson died in Waterbury at about 60. Her probate will distributes small cash gifts to nephews and nieces not exceeding 34 in money, then personal articles, and leaves the residue worth about 2000 pounds to the Vermont branch of the board of missions and the Americas Bible Society of New York. Plimbeth Elliott is named executrix.
The January term closed with the February term set to begin February 3. Cases across Vermont counties including Franklin, Windham, Windsor, and Chittenden moved, with some continuances and several trials set for Brattleboro. Worcester had been at the school for stealing a bicycle and had previously fled with another boy to Florence before being separated.
Fire gutted Charles Johnson’s fruit store at the North Street and North Winooski avenue corner in Burlington near three this morning, sparing the two story Enright block top floors. Johnson woke, sent alarm to Assistant Chief Stockwell, then collapsed on a veranda.

An unidentified man died and three others were likely fatally burned when a fire destroyed the National hotel in Fort Wayne Indiana this morning. The blaze started with an explosion of a coal stove in the office and several people jumped to escape the flames.
Washington D C Jan 22 The government owned railway bill for Alaska faced a Senate roll call at 4 o clock with leaders confident of an overwhelming majority. The measure would authorize 1100 miles of rail linking the Pacific coast to the interior amid broad opposition to government ownership. House action could take weeks.
New York records show Mrs. Robert Goelet seeks an absolute divorce from her husband, the Newport filing disclosed yesterday. Attorney Samuel Untermyer said Mrs. Goelet, who is Henry Whelen’s daughter, regards the matter private. Friends note ongoing differences despite residence on Fifth Avenue to preserve appearances. Goelet, heir of the late Ogden Goelet, holds an estate exceeding 15 million and expected to gain 26 million more.
Eastern Stars of Chapter 33 C E S held their annual inspection by grand lodge officers. Traffic weather kept some from attending, but about 140 remained for the meeting, drill team praise, banquet by a men's circle, and social hour with speeches and singing.
Henry Plouff was arrested by Chief Sinclair and arraigned before Acting Judge A. A. Sargent for larceny of four electric items worth two dollars. He pleaded guilty and paid a two dollar fine plus 55.14 in costs. Leonard St. John, who caused a disturbance, pleaded guilty to a disorderly offense and paid a four dollar total fine and costs.
At an adjourned Parre City hospital trustees session the board voted to hire DC. T. Pencil to run the hospital building land campaign. Feneil now leads a Danbury campaign that netted 2000 dollars on opening day of solicitation. He is expected to visit Barre in early February for preparatory work before the week of active fundraising. The trustees also elected Dr. William McFarlane to the staff to fill Dr. L. L. Leonard’s vacancy, and Dr. D. C. Jarvin to replace the resigning Dr. Camp.
On the final night of the eighth annual Vermont Poultry Association exhibition at Montpelier Armory, prize winners were announced. Names include CGauthier Gibbs Montpelier with multiple prizes in cock hen cocker pullet categories, NS Parker Barre with top cocker and hen wins, W E Prevost Montpelier in Cockerel, P J Connelly Montpelier Hen, and many others across breeds such as American Dominiques Partridge Cochins Blue Andalusians Black Langshans and Javas. White and Brown Egg prizes credited to winners from Montpelier and surrounding towns.
The 17th Vermont State Poultry association exhibition in St Albans drew large attendance on day two. Judges from Washington and Fall River announced winners across breeds including White Leghorns, Partridge Wyandottes, and Rhode Island Reds. A White Leghorn cockerel owned by J F Flundburg won best bird, while W D Pronty and Levi Ayers contended for top cups.
Niagara Falls New York January 22 The board of health ordered every theatre closed due to a smallpox outbreak. Seventy nine houses are under quarantine and twenty patients are in the quarantine hospital. Free vaccination dispensaries have been opened.
The annual meeting of the First Presbyterian Church reported a strong year with 24 new members added, six transfers, and two deaths. The church rose to third largest in its presbytery with 221 members, raised over 4,000 including property purchases, and planned a new organ and a rear addition. A new steward was elected to replace George Young. The session praised officers and the pastor, and a social hour followed.
The Aldrich public library reported 62 705 books circulated in the past year and 907 members registered. Additions totaled 295 volumes bringing shelves to 10 608 with sources including the Aldrich library Barre city French Town library and gifts. The report notes cooperation with teachers and a $200 rebinding grant, plus printed lists from the Barre Daily Times.
