In Boston on January 13, 2800 longshoremen sat out while about 200 freight handlers remained at work. The dispute pits longshoremen against steamship agents over freight movement. A trans Atlantic liner, the Cam Prion, finally sailed with a full cargo, delayed by the strike.
Mills in Lawrence under heavy police cover resume work as about four thousand operatives in several mills remain on strike protesting wage levels and enforcement of the law. Some workers receive weekly pay while the Everett mill will shut down indefinitely. a few disturbances and arrests occur as authorities urge unity across languages spoken in the mill district. The city posts militia in case of further tension.
Washington D C June 13 President Taft has equalled Roosevelt era trust prosecutions under the Sherman act totaling 44 in a little over three years. Of these eighteen were in equity and filed, 25 indictments returned, one forfeiture proceeding. Civil suits and indictments rise to about the same pace in similar time.
The Rutland company transfers operations to the Western Transit line of Buffalo. George T. Jarvis of Rutland becomes president as the Buffalo manager resignations are noted. Western Transit officers resign from the Ogdensburg company. Rutland service will be the new line.
A Marianta to Helene route steamer Nettie Johanna struck a navy lifeline on the L Anguille and sank today. Several survivors were drowning and feared dead due to exposure and injuries. Rescue teams report only a few badly hurt and in need of care amid freezing conditions.
Charles W. Morse, the New York banker, was transferred from Fort McPherson Georgia to the Army and Navy General Hospital at Hot Springs Arkansas for medical treatment. Attorney General Wickersham said the transfer was ordered by the president and Morse remains under penitentiary custody.
At Caen a jury convicted Robert de Couvrigny of parricide and the Baroness de Couvrigny of complicity and attempted poisoning. The baroness and the youth were sentenced to death and 20 years, respectively, amid testimony of family plots in Fresne-la-Mère. French aviator Jules Vedrines set a world speed record at Pau France, flying eighty eight miles in one hour in a monoplane. The event is reported as the fastest time achieved to date, marking a landmark in early aviation history.
Rutland’s Jan We Arver led a year long stint at Tokeen Alaska aboard the Arthur Lyman. A barge was struck and sunk by an outward bound steamer Belfast near Deer inland at dawn. Nelson, a crew member on the Belfast, was injured while Warne’s barge sank. the incident left one man dead and the Belfast damaged.
United States Circuit Judge William Hook of Kansas, a leading candidate for the Supreme Court, sent a personal reply to President Taft denying charges aimed at thwarting his nomination. Senator Curtis of Kansas spoke to Taft, and Hook contends his son was merely a law student during the Oklahoma two cent fare dispute.

Rabbi Jacob Goodman of Burlington died suddenly at his North Winooski Avenue home around 8 30 last evening from heart failure. Born in Antwerp in 1872 he studied in Jerusalem and Palestine before coming to America. He served briefly as a Jersey City rabbi, then returned to the country and joined Burlington’s synagogue five weeks ago with his family. State laboratory procedures involved inoculation tests and microscopic examinations, with findings prompting continued butter testing under the pure food law and state board orders. The report notes tubercle bacilli can persist in butter in cold storage for months, though packaging processes mitigate spread.

Mrs. A. 5 Bird widow of Aberander Bird died at her Barre home on Merchant Street shortly after 2 pm from heart trouble. She leaves daughters Mrs. Maggie Wind and Eve and sons Alexander Bird Bind Bird and Fred Bird. Born in Aberslepth Scotland in 1834 she migrated to Amwellton before settling in Barre twenty years ago. Charter member of Ladies' Aid and active worker in the Clan Gordon. Funeral at Congregational Church tomorrow at 7 pm with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.

Montpelier fire department responded to a blaze on River Street last night demolishing a dwelling owned by L. Huntington and including contents such as a piano from Miss Lone Ghio. The gas meter was saved with difficulty. The house, built twelve years ago, burned completely while the thermometer read eight below zero.
In St. Johnsbury a fire gutted the rear part of Perley Russell’s home on the outskirts of Paddock Village Thursday night. Firemen saved the main house though the dome roof and furnishings suffered. loss around 1900 with only 900 insured. Mrs Ransell, at home with five children, all escaped unharmed. Distances from hydrants and long hose lay hindered firefighting, delaying stop of the blaze for nearly an hour.

Jan 1 Libury Northfield reports the coldest temperature yet this winter at the Weather Bureau station. The 630 clock reading hit 21 below zero, with 11 o'clock forenoon at 4 below. A warmup is forecast tomorrow though the night remains bitter. The south feels the chill with snow and sleet in North Carolina Charleston and Retvigh noting storms. The bureau cautions the frigid arc may shift east from Montana.
Barre area reports frigid morning with many granite plants idle. Barelay Bros. plant in the south end kept workers on five days running despite the cold, as household thermometers show temperatures ranging from 20 below to 34 degrees below zero.

Weather bulletin says a warming wave from the Rocky Mountains will reach the Lakes region, bringing much higher temperatures after a string of subzero days. Today marks the last bitter day for a period, with forecasted milder air spreading from the west toward the Northwest and a gradual rise near 0 or above in the lakes area.
