A gas explosion at the Minneapolis General Electric fuze plant caused a heavy fire and massive damage. Two men were badly hurt and several others lightly injured, with property losses estimated at 500,000 and the city left without light before fires were contained.
In Pittebugr Pennsylvan ia a pennypressed air tank weighing 100 inches exploded near a trolley car in the business district. It ripped through windows, wounded four people and fatally struck Samuel Pollock, 40, as he stood by a storefront. Bessie Zonta and Hy Meyers, 15, suffered minor injuries while others rushed victims to a hospital.
11 year old Nora Nagle was shot in the stomach by Willie Mart Wart, the year-old brother of Capt Eddie Wart, after a rifle discharged while he pointed it at her. Nora remains in critical condition at the Cot Yage hospital. doctors May and Nate report uncertain prognosis. County Solicitor Rateholder has been notified and will review results.
An Augusta senator died after heart trouble. The obituary notes his birth in Paris Maine and links to paper and pulp manufacturing. The funeral for Ire Bemis was held at his house Wednesday at 2 pm with Rev. A J Whitney officiating. Bearers included Locke Ote and Coraden Benith among others. Bemis, born March 10, 1833, was a lifelong resident, married in September 1882, survived by his wife and several relatives.
In Montpelier the session moved with less drama than yesterday as the House debated weekend adjournment and set plans to resume work Saturday and Monday. The Senate acted independently, scheduling adjournment to Monday evening. Multiple bills advanced, including criminal sentencing, bail, tax exemptions, and rail operations, with a notable compromise talk between central normal school advocates and current practices. A $140,000 highway appropriation passed the Senate.
In a late evening session the house committee on constitutional amendments held a hearing on nine proposed changes.
