A major daytime blaze in the Sehoonover block destroys the Telephone Exchange building and endangers the business district. The opera house is flooded and nearby structures suffer heavy damage. Aid from neighboring towns is summoned as of early afternoon with damage estimated at 860,000 dollars.
Fire swept the harbor area at Messina destroying wooden harbor buildings including the post office telegraph office and station. Troops were deployed to hinder spread as flames consumed structures causing extensive damage estimated at a million dollars.
Fire at the J. C. White & Co store on Main Street caused heavy smoke damage last night originating from the basement furnace. Groceries and goods burned. owner Mrs. White's loss about 36000 with insurance. Adjoining music store and upper floors suffered smoke and water damage. Police assisted residents including Mrs Veasie and Mrs Southard, and nearby manicure parlors were damaged by smoke.
At 2 Hamp Street a three story brick house fire yesterday injures three occupants. Mrs. John Sawyer, her daughter Lillian, and Catherine were treated for burns and smoke inhalation after falling on the stairs during the blaze. Police evacuated the family. fire damage to the flat was slight.
A major fire in Dexter Maine destroyed two sector hose stables on Spring Street at 8 40 PM. Flames broke out from a chimney and spread rapidly before alarms, with water streams battling the blaze and smoke overcoming owner William L. Davis who operated the local water house.
In Columbus a mother left to run a grocery errand. her four year old daughter Marile Te and Margaret Sheets, aged unknown, perished in a home fire when she returned. The fire killed the sisters as they slept near an open gas fire. investigators suspect a flash from the flame.
A deadly boiler explosion at the Morenoo Like Lee plant in Pittsfield yesterday left seventeen dead. An inspector and three deputies opened an inquiry and an inquest will be held before Judge Burke. Nine more names listed among the dead include engineers, firemen, carpenters and laborers. City relief quickly mobilized with nearly 3900 raised. bodies badly mutilated complicated identification. property damage substantial though estimated under 8500.
A Berlin protest over the Lower Rhine Aeroplane association claim centers on the America balloon's selection to represent the country in an international race. Maritime firemen on New York municipal ferries walked out after Major Gaynor ordered retrenchment and assignment to duties outside their department. The South Staten Island and South Brooklyn ferries were tied up, causing thousands of commuters to face delays into the city.
Eighty longshoremen, members of the union, walked off the job in Portland yesterday over loading duties. An appraisal was conducted yesterday afternoon at the U S marshal's office for two trunks owned by Frank T. Partridge of New York. The trunks contained wearable apparel for Mr and Mrs Partridge, including hats and outerwear. A bond was furnished before United States Commissioner Vilas to cover the value of the goods.

Burlington report says Jota K. Cooper, jailed on murder in the first degree charges for the killing of James William, was taken to Wipowski for a preliminary hearing before Judge Gonlin. The hearing was postponed due to B K Brown, Cooper’s attorney, being tied up in another case. The State’s Attorney noted proper representation is needed, and the hearing likely won’t occur until Brown is available in Liberty.
A Vermont news item notes the FP AL Works store in White River Junction was broken into late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Between 8 and 10 dollars were taken from the money drawer. No definite clue or suspect identified yet.

Granville man D B Braymer wins two silver cups at the Vermont Poultry show held in Barre and Granville. John P Gorskie of Barre and Mrs A W Allen of Barre win silver cups for best displays in specific classes. Other awards go to Frank Haynes of Barre and Charles Oliver of Barre. The event includes youth attendance, a chalk talk by judge W H Card in Spaulding school chapel, and a late today completion of remaining ribbon results.

The funeral of Mrs Mesghet Clinesa was held yesterday at the Anniversary Church with Rev Edwant officiating. A large attendance of friends and relatives gathered. Members of Bath chapter O B S and Ladies of Chin Gordon attended. Eastern Star services followed the ceremony. Pallbearers included John Reid Jol Daniels Alex Milne William McBarden James Cassail Jones and R Coutts. Interment was in the family hillside mood cemetery.
The funeral of Rudolph Pates was held yesterday from his home at 12 Poster Street Row I. W. Barnett officiating. Friends contributed flowers including white carnations from Mrs. Pates and others. Burial followed at Wilen Cemetery.
Gov John A Mead appoints George T Chaffee of Rutland as a true son of the state school of agriculture for a one year term completing the board of trustees. The full board includes Gov Mead Orlando L Martin of Plainfield and others. Also named were Dr W Scott Noy of Uderkilt and Dr B D Whitaker of Barre as delegates to the council of medical education at Chicago May 1 2 3 191.
A hearing before the public service commission in Hardwick focused on electric light charges for Marshall’s tenements. The village insists tenants must pay incoming bills, while Marshall refuses responsibility for tenants' prior charges. A compromise was arranged pending a supreme court case.
State's Attorney Carver held a brief hearing to record witness testimony in a raid case involving Gallagher. Samuel Bennett Daniel Hagan and Sidney Adshade testified about liquor sold in a Bolster block room. Judge Scott bound Gallagher over with bail of 8500 and ordered destruction of the pint bottle.
Joseph Sassi was arrested and jailed on bail over 5000 to answer to a county court charge for an assault on A Cavalazzi in a barber shop. Cavalazzi alleges Sassi drew a revolver and fired or threatened to, wounding his lip with a bullet. A crossfire scene is said to have occurred outside the shop with revolvers and razors drawn. Sassi seeks 35,000 damages from Luigi Galleani in a counter suit. Bondsmen named include G Catto, P Negroni, A Perolini, L Poort, and G Moralli, with W Gordon as Cavalazzi counsel. Deputy Morrie also to locate Galleani to serve papers. Circulars in Italian circulated in the town’s north end criticizing Galleani.

Also reports a Barre Independent defeat by the Hardwick Mardwiet team 41 to 25 in a three period game with Case and Underwood noted for baskets.
