Authorities in cities and towns west of the Rhine express satisfaction at the arrival of British troops. The move promises food and restored order as residents fear hunger and unrest from their own people.
A Daily Mail correspondent reports German attitudes shifting after Haig's eastward advance. Residents welcome British troops, citing fear of starvation and relief from war. Though revolutionary talk exists, outbreaks were dampened by retreating forces and soldiers in reserve, who fear bolshevik influence and seek peace.

Rear Admiral Braisted reports Navy health and low mortality improved by better sanitation and officer discipline. Deaths totaled 198 drownings 90 exposures and 47 gunshot fatalities as weather and rapid expansion strained hospitals but quarterly rates trended toward peacetime averages. The navy fights disease and social ills with a nationwide prevention campaign.
In Garfield Washington D C the fuel administrator urged President Wilson to join discussions in Paris on fuel production and distribution. Henry P. Davison of the Red Cross war council and Bernard M Baruch of the war industries board also reportedly received similar calls. The trio may be summoned soon after the president arrives in France.

A deputation greeted the Hussars. orders to fire were carried out, the crowd engaged, disarming the riders and forcing them to march.
Baltimore December report quotes Speaker Champ Clark opening the Southern Commercial Congress noting freedom of the seas as a wartime concern and urging modernization of navigation laws to boost foreign trade and keep the immense wartime merchant fleet. He predicts President Wilson will secure sea freedom at Versailles and stresses seizing postwar trade opportunities.
Washington December reports the Minnesota oil inspection law of 1900 upheld in a dispute over inspection fees. The Pure Oil Company faced a claim for 10400 dollars in fees allegedly due for gasoline oil inspection, with the law sustaining the state's authority.
The S A shipment of flax from Archangel arrives in New York aboard the United States Shipping Board steamship Ascutney. The vessel departed Archangel shortly after the armistice and previously sailed to Mumansk, Russia, carrying Red Cross officials. On board were polar bear cubs sent by an American officer in Russia. The same vessel formerly bore the German ship Pisa.
Geneva reports the modern Saxon royal house fortunes, that is Frederick Augustus and Prince George, have been placed under sequestration by the new government. Estates and properties are seized while civil debts are paused.

The $60,000 suit by Mrs Nora Belle White of Boston against executors of the late George K of Suffield was withdrawn in Hartford district court. Judge Edwin S. Thomas and the jury were present as counsel for the plaintiff withdrew an hour after notices of withdrawal.
County Chairman E A Harris appoints James Higgins of Barre to lead Barre City and Graniteville East Barre Websterville and South Barre with John T Cowley as publicity manager and Mrs S B Ballard as county supply manager. Miss Tidawne of Berlin to be cashier and chair Montpelier office. A Montpelier conference with Mr McKee and local organizers scheduled for this afternoon.
Secretary McAdoo urged Congress to authorize loans after peace to governments detached from the United States in the war. About 1.5 billion dollars in war bonds could fund feeding and rebuilding devastated countries, but legislative authority is required. A House Ways and Means Committee hearing was set for Wednesday with McAdoo and Leffingwell.
Orange county court opened December term with Judge Zed Stanton presiding and many local officials present. Roland Day and Frank Anderson pleaded guilty to burglary in Randolph Center. Day, 15, was sent to the state reform school in Vergennes and Anderson, 21, to the house of correction for three to four years with probation after delay due to youth and family.
A large crowd attended the Granite Street Auditorium for an Italian Pleasure and Italian Veronese club hospital benefit. Prizes included a bronze flower pot and a gold mounted pipe. proceeds exceed expectations with large advance ticket sales and extensive canvassing planned for the coming days to support the hospital fund.
Samuel Matson an elderly Barre resident born in Cranborn P Q died peacefully Sunday morning at his home on Keith Avenue after a long illness. He was 82 and married in Cranborn December 22 1863 to Margaret McKeag. Nine children survived him William of St Cloud Minnie A Henry of Coneand Capt Samuel Matson Jr in the U S aviation service George died in Missouri Theodora died in Concord David of Detroit Mrs Jonnie Prindle Robert of Detroit and Albert C Matson of Breton. Born July 22 1837 in Cranborn he moved to Northfield in 1804 then to Barre in 1912. He was a faithful Episcopal church member. The funeral will be held at the Prindle home Wednesday morning at 10 80 o'clock Rev Be Leach of Christ Church Montpelier officiating. Burial in Northfield Center Cemetery with interment there after services in Barre.
Funeral services were held for Bario Proxtini a leading Barre granite cutter who died Wednesday after a brief illness. The Barre Italian community formed a large escort as the body was taken to Hope Cemetery for interment with many floral tributes from family friends and fellow settlers.
The US Army transport Sierra arrived with officers and privates, many former 60th New York National Guard, returning from abroad. Crowds lined the rails as the ship neared Hoboken, bands played Home Sweet Home, and personnel aboard saluted Liberty as the vessel tied up.
