Elmer A Barroll aged 19 of Woalford was instantly killed by a falling tree while cutting a leaning trunk on a lot owned by Stephen Castle. The tree split and toppled crushing his head. the body required levers for removal. Survivors include his father mother and brother.
At the regular meeting in Central Labor Union hall Concord Granite Cutters of Concord Nova Scotia elected officers. Thomas Murphy was named president with James Reed as vice president James Nolan recording secretary James Murphy financial secretary and William Spurge treasurer.
Poughkeepsie N Y Aug 22 Clore finishes were common as turf racing closed at Mud River Driving Park yesterday afternoon. The 2 14 trot in heat one produced a sensational finish with Loyal driven by Geers lifting his horse to win by a head in 210 percent, slightly faster than last week. Loyal then won heat two easily and entered the select 2 10 list, by 2 00 percent. In heat three Loyal stayed safe while Cereal won the 2 20 trot after a hard bid and a broken pace by Cereal near the start.
In Des Moines on August 22 W. J. Bryan, the Democratic presidential candidate, addressed a large crowd at the base ball park and assailed Republican tariff promises. He argued the Democrats must include a platform declaration that the people cannot safely entrust tariff policy to a party deeply owned by protected interests.
A. M. Sheldon and J. S. Sheldon, the sole Vermont players, won the doubles title with Morse and Reynolds. The match went 6-0 1-6 6-3 6-7 6-2, cementing their superiority through strong teamwork. Morse and Reynolds meet in the singles finale today to cap the tournament.

Charles Street of the Washington base ball team won an 8500 bet by catching a baseball dropped from the top of the Washington monument. After thirteen attempts due to wind, the ball was caught 560 feet above ground, despite jarred impact on Street’s catching mitt.
In Onwera New York August 2 after a ten day session with 332 ballots cast Charles L Knupp was nominated for Congress by the Twenty eighth District Republican convention Jenne L Hunt of Jefferson withdrew from the race leaving Knupp with 20 votes Merrick Stowell of Owego received 13 votes
Cincinnati August 22 George B Cox Republican boss of Hamilton County fails to gain admission to the citys upper circle and plans to relocate to New York. He sells Cincinnati real estate including the Livey Kayley saloon and another Tenderloin property where he began as a bartender.
Judge Albion Parker addressed about eighteen hundred people at the Coliseum in Seattle under the King County Democratic Club and Aryan volunteers. He argued tariffs harm the public, urged lowering the tariff, opposed federal control of corporations, and proposed jail penalties for crooked corporate campaign contributions. Delancey Nicoll of New York followed with a brief address.

In St Albans on August 22 Henry Merrill of Fairfield suffered a devastating fire at daybreak destroying a new hay barn, cow barn, wagon shed, and most contents. Thirteen cows, fourteen lambs, four horses, fodder, and farming tools burned. stock described as high grade, with substantial loss expected.
Deputy Whittaker of Rutland served papers in Danby on Edward Jenkins for a slander suit filed by Eugene Witherell of Danby seeking $2,000 in damages for alleged false statements injuring Witherell’s faith and credit. A body execution was posted. $200 bail furnished. Suit returnable at Rutland county court in September.
Aug 22 Old Orenant Mo. Joseph H Hellen of Melrose Highlands, an elderly man lost in woods near camp meeting grounds for two days, was found exhausted. He was taken to his cottage and fed. aside from weakness, no serious injuries were reported.
Biddeford August 22 a monster sea turtle weighing about 1200 pounds was captured twelve miles east of Wood Island by Captain Taylor Durygin and crew aboard the Portland sloop Sea Foam. The turtle died en route to Biddefont Pool after being harpooned on the bowsprit during defense against its fight to escape. None of the veteran fishers recall a prior similar catch.
Fire early yesterday destroyed Owleyout lodge a steamer hotel in Clinton eutity Morrill and burned to death a day employed in the house. The hotel capacity 1000 guests crowded with visitors from Washington and Philadelphia. all escaped with injuries and losses. Miss Bertha Kalich the Polish actress a guest just barely escaped.
Lili e Granite of Montpelier has installed a massive polishing wheel likely the largest in the area. The 482 foot vaned machine is to span an entrance lane 80 or 90 feet long, promising about ten percent more output. The wheel was manufactured by PFtsh & Co of Ruthland.

John Lucia was arrested in Montpelier on larceny charges after Luther and Mrs Nelson reported money missing from their Jobe Jones farm. Found on Lucia were 80 dollars, a 170 ticket, and other small items. Police tracked him from Central Vermont station to Barre where he confessed.
A heavily loaded electric car on Nort Main St toward the city square emitted smoke and flames from the floor after a burning wire. Passengers in the rear escaped with water and buckets, firefighters from nearby workers tamed the blaze. No injuries reported despite a near panic at Main and Berlin.
The state board of railroad commissioners ordered a new connecting highway segment to bypass two dangerous railroad crossings on the Central Vermont line near the station east of North Knosburg, with completion set for November 15. The board cleared Central Vermont of responsibility for a fatality near Swanton on May 29 and noted John Golden, killed on the Canadian Pacific near Kichford, was a freights carter at the time.
