Allied hammering collapses German defenses as French forces smash through near Soissons and along the River Aisne. The latest advance threatens the German position and may force a retreat toward the Chemin des Dames, reshaping the battle on the front.
London reports the French tenth army drove on a ten mile front between the Oise and Aisne reaching two miles depth. German positions at Soissons and the Aisne are endangered as Braquemont Fendu woods, Beuvraignes area, and near Roye show French gains. Earlier, a twelve mile front yielded about four miles advance amid stiff resistance with gains along the Oise valley and toward Noyon.

Carcassonne France Aug 20 Major Baker of General Dershing staff and a lieutenant were thrown from an automobile into a ditch after colliding with an ox cart beside the road between Alzonne Montolien in Aiule. Both were seriously injured.
Settlement of the machinists strike affecting more than 50,000 workers in northern New Jersey was reached today via mediator Major B H Gitchell. Wages will be based on the hourly rate at Frankford arsenal and the New York and Philadelphia navy yards with time and a half for Sundays and holidays. Adjustments possible if cost of living changes by ten percent or more.
London August 20. Women workers joined the omnibus and street car strike across the city boosting lines on the and mil railways where many remain at work. Yesterday saw ten women walk out and today more strikes expanded. Over fourteen thousand employees are reported out on strike.
Aug 20. Sixty Prussians, machine gunners in a company under a month old, were taken prisoner near Fismes north of Wismes with no shots fired. American detachments hunted gun positions after a Mariner report. prisoners said they were ready to surrender at the slightest stir, while Americans claimed the Prussians deserted. A German prisoner cited positions of other soldiers taken Saturday.
Washington D C Aug 20 Organized labor opposes the work or fight amendment to the new Manpower bill extending draft ages. Frank Morrison of the American Federation of Labor calls the Senate provision an attack on loyalty and a covert conscription of labor. He cites hidden interests shaping anti labor legislation. Education questions were discussed with Dr S R Manno of the war department committee, hearings closed as the bill moves toward immediate consideration.
Amsterdam reports via Moscow that the Entente forces in the Archangel sector of northwestern Russia have withdrawn beyond Bolshevik artillery range. Soviet troops are said to have advanced toward the Baikal tunnel on the Trans Siberian railway.

Republican candidates include governor C H Darling and others. Democrat ticket lists W B Mayo for governor and Henry C Brislin for lieutenant governor, among others. Atlantic Port report says a 400-ton German submarine was sunk by the gun crew of a British tanker after a surface action. Chief mate John Crosby describes the encounter, torpedo pass, and the sinking as the tanker reached safe harbor. Crosby, injured and in shock, recalls the fight and the submarine drifting broadside before sinking.
Washington Aug 20 A nationwide inquiry by the Bureau of Labor Statistics begins in Baltimore with six agents collecting data from representative families on annual expenditures for food clothing housing fuel furniture and miscellaneous items. Initial data show a 3 percent rise since June 15 in essential food articles and price drops in some items. July 2018 compared with the prior year shows overall increases, fresh beef and chicken rising most, with five-year gains around 69 percent for selected items.
