French forces smashed German defenses along a nine mile front between the Oise and Aisne rivers and advanced more than a mile, taking two villages and about 1700 prisoners in a coordinated thrust that threatens the German defensive system.
French forces launched a nine mile attack between the Aisne and Oise fronts, reaching 1.8 miles depth and taking 1,700 prisoners. Villages Nampcel and Nouvron Vingré fell, Andignyourt edge reached. John Leslie Martin, son of Mr and Mrs George F Martin of Williamstown, wrote home from France dated July 30 1918 saying he was recovering well and in one of the most beautiful places he had seen in France He notes ammunition shortages and that he will turn 21 on the 26th of August He enlisted in Co 1 2 Massachusetts Infantry May 2 1917 and later served with the 14th Infantry 26th division overseas since September last Efforts to pass along his letter reached his parents Aug 10 It is seven months since he first entered front trenches.
Mrs John Brown of 15 Bassett Street received a telegram from the war department on Saturday stating her son Sergt James Brown had been severely wounded in action on July 22. An Aug 1 letter from him, mailed Aug 2, reported shell shock and asked not to worry. He served with A Company 101st Machine Gun Battalion after enlisting in Barre Vermont.
Washington August 19 plan for stabilizing petroleum prices recommended by the national petroleum war service committee in New York last week was accepted by the fuel administration. The administration believes the agreement will prevent any sudden changes in gasoline and other oil product prices for consumers.
The Norwegian bark Norhay, 2623 tons, sailed June 15 from Buenos Aires. Off the Virginia Capes about 128 miles southeast of Cape Henry, it was sunk by a German submarine. All 26 crew escaped in two boats and were brought to an Atlantic port by an American warship. The navy reports no confirmed hits or shells beyond the sinking. Captain Berntsen was master.
A Vermont Republican state committee delegation met Gov. Graham to press a resolution on appointments. The governor offered no public comment on possible actions. Separate notes say Frank Williams denies an invitation and a Democrat protests Republican civilian appointments in Washington.
Eighteen states were ordered by the provost marshal general to furnish 5,700 white draft registrants with grammar school education for general service. Men report September 6. voluntary enlistments close August 26. Ohio and the District of Columbia also must provide fifteen registrants each for reporting at Wilbur Wright Field, Dayton, and the M8th aero squadron in Washington.
Washington August 19 the Shipping Board announced contracts for thirty three wooden cargo vessels of 300 deadweight tons each. Also noted were wooden barges and three wooden harbor tugs lost the week ending August 19.
Washington reports Secretary Baker and General Crowder urged rapid expansion of a wartime draft with no blanket marriage exemption. They proposed a separate 18 to 19 year old class and intended calls by mid 1919, aiming for 2,100,000 men by June 1919 and 2,000,000 by the time eighty divisions reach France.
Washington August 19. Senate will begin consideration of a new manpower bill extending the draft law next Thursday. With a quorum present the chamber set aside the vacation recess until August 24 and cleared the way for immediate action on the draft measure. Senator Chamberlain asked for the recess to be vacated and announced he would bring up the bill Thursday.
Postmaster General Burleson approved a 10 percent wage increase for Western Union Company employees. The decision was announced at the company offices in New York on August 19.
Ex governor Prouty of Roseto allegedly rode a railroad car rolling near Waterville, Port of call P. C. was riding in an automobile from his Newport home to Lennoxville P Q where he planned a train to Jackman Maine.
George M. Prouty former Vermont governor and prominent lumberman died when his automobile was struck by a train near Waterville Quebec at 6 30 this morning en route to his Jackman Maine camp. Chauffeur DW Blay was seriously injured. Prouty aged 56 was born March 4 1862 in Newport. He built a major northern New England lumber business with properties in Canada and Maine and also served as lieutenant governor and governor. He chaired in private life as a Boston and Maine railroad director.
Saturday afternoon a Peerless touring car driven by Miriam Staples skated onto North Main street injuring seven year old Kathleen Carroll with a fractured collar bone and torn ear while sister Alice Carroll escaped unharmed. Annie Barclay was cut on the elbow. Kathleen’s father A B Staples stopped the car and towed the girl home for medical care as Drs Woodruff and Lyng treated her. Grand Juror Wishart found no sign of speeding, noting driver confusion at a busy crossing.
James F. O Connor a 48 year old Boston resident and Bethel Chrome Tanning employee died from a fall at Miss Mae Ince Savage's boardinghouse. He toppled the stairs around 4 30 yesterday morning injuring his skull and bleeding from the ear. Fellow workman Walter Morrison found him alive but incoherent before he passed away. An undertaker prepared the body while guardians abroad in Gardiner Me held burial arrangements.
Sherbrooke Quebec Aug 10 G Th Prouty former governor of Vermont was killed when his car collided with a Grand Tronk train near Waterville as dense fog hid the approaching engine. The chauffeur J W Hiay was pinned and suffered concussion while Prouty died instantly.
Relatives of Sergt Albert A Marr recount his letters describing a bullet wound to his right arm after action July 18 in France He was taken to Nantes base hospital and on July 23 pronounced OK and near discharge He praises hospital care and notes a cousin of Miss Cora Roberts among the ward nurses He enjoyed concerts moving pictures and Red Cross events The chaplain from Rhode Island impressed him and he mentions fellow Barre boy Stanley Averill now with a Massachusetts company on a route march
Mrs Erwin Lawliss received a Saturday letter from her son First Class Private Ralph Lawliss saying he was hospitalized after an explosion on July 22. He describes concussion from shell fire and surviving a chaotic moment in the field hospital, thanking God for his escape while noting fighters nearby.
