A Love Field bound airplane caught fire near Dalian Texas on August 2. The aviator, badly burned, jumped from the burning craft and was killed by the fall. The incident occurred as the plane burned in the air before crashing.
A Brookline Massachusetts cadet, W. Rodger, was killed in an airship accident at Chanute Field near Champaign Illinois on August 2. The incident ends a promising early career in aviation training.
Washington Aug 2 American forces in France have reached a high level of training and will provide instructors for new units in the United States. No further allied instructors will be requested except for special technical tasks. Officers are ordered back to command brigades in 12 new divisions, including Brigadier General MacArthur to Camp Meade and Brigadier General Vanderbilt (ex‑engineer colonel) to Camp Lewis.
The American steamship Poseidon, 1,911 tons gross, formerly under the Dutch flag, sank after a collision with an American tanker off the Delaware capes. Five crew members of 38 are missing. Captain J. Phrin died after being landed. Thirty three crewmen were landed at Lewes, Delaware. The tanker sustained damage and entered a nearby port. Poseidon had been on a Honto to Norfolk voyage when sunk.

Police found Clifford G. Wright dead with Hazel Tanner on a Connecticut river bridge after a motor tour. Authorities believe Wright killed Tanner then died by his own hand. a letter indicates a New York Connecticut trip. Wright, 42, a married mechanic, and Miss Tanner, 29, were shot in the right temple.
Lakeville Conn Aug 8 a man identified as Jon Smith owner of a garage housing eleven autos was burned to death when the business caught fire last night. Fire from a vulcanizing operation ignited a wall and exploded oil spray covering him as he rushed to save cars. Firemen saved nearby property though the two story wood building and rear metal garage were destroyed. Smith sister and Morgan Elvert family resided above the shop.
Federal indictments charge Dr Edward A Rumely former NY Mail and Express vice president and secretary and S Walter Kaufmann former German embassy counsel with conspiring to purchase The Evening Mail for the German government in 1915 and perjury related to the report to Mitchell Palmer.

Beatrice P Duke of 36 Fifteenth Avenue Newark appeared before U S Commissioner Frank McGuire on charges of impersonating a United States army officer and violating the May 18 act. The case was continued to August 17 with bail set at 45 000.
Robert W. Simonds of the U S Employment Service announced Vermont's quota of men expected to be moved into war work. A revision is set for August 15 as boards review the figures. Miss Lenath Soule arrived in the city en route to Fairfield after visiting New York and parts of Connecticut, guest of Miss Rachel Hollister. Soule was a member of Goddard Seminary's 1918 graduating class.
