Barnesville Clubs Reflect a Town’s Social Pulse
Barnesville hosts a lively array of clubs led by the old Barnesville Social and Literary Club and the Woman’s Shakespearean Club. The Social and Literary Club survived a staffing crisis through male escorts, while the Shakespearian Club studies Hamlet and Ophelia under Mrs. James Marcellus Cochrane. Other groups include the Cooking Club, Floral Club with a Chrysanthemum Show, and the Crokinole Club for younger boys. A Daughters of the Confederacy chapter roots in Gordon Institute, with early funds sent to Col. Robt. C. Wood for future construction.
