A narrator recalls first impressions of New York with friend Jones, highlighting comic missteps. Jones misplaces his hands in pockets, counts windows, and gets lost near Brooklyn. They chase a hat on Broadway, then visit Manhattan Beach where Jones faints at the sight of others in surf attire, while the speaker endures a chilly ocean plunge.
The piece explains indigestion as the likely cause of headaches neuralgia nervousness dizziness stomachaches and more. It argues undigested fermenting food poisons the stomach and insists Shaker Digestive Cordial prevents fermentation and aids digestion. It claims symptoms vanish once poisons are removed and notes the product is sold by druggists from 10 cents to 1.00 per bottle.
In August 1895 a large black snake entered a farmer’s home near Coffeyville and swallowed an eight day clock. The clock ticked inside the snake until it ran down. The snake returned and laid eggs from which the farmer found a gold watch in each. He fed the snake a post auger hoping for fence posts next spring.
Stands at the head. Aug J Bogel of Shreveport says it cures his cough and is the best seller. J F Campbell of Safford writes it is all that is claimed and a sure cure for consumption coughs and colds. Not an experiment, has stood the test for twenty five years. Exclaimed Plodding Pete laments oppression while Meandering Mike taunts him. A comical exchange mocks anarchists and praises government as best friend. The piece ends with a wartime style ad praising De Witt's Witch Hazel Salve for eczema and piles.
The Paris game uses numbered balloons with envelopes containing postal cards addressed to the contest judge. Balloons are released and land far apart, phones note the finder’s time and place, and cards are returned. After a week the farthest balloon in least time wins.
Electric Bitters is offered as a medicine suitable for any season and especially when languor and liver sluggishness prevail. It is claimed to counteract malaria, head ahe, indigestion, constipation and dizziness. available at S. B. Burr Jr's Drug Store in bottles priced 5cc and $1.00.
The passage extols DeWitts Little Early Risers as tiny pills that cause no griping yet act quickly and thoroughly. It emphasizes their small size and strong results.
The New York Journal turns over about $20,000 raised by the paper to the National Democratic Committee, adding one dollar for each contributed dollar.
