The Glacier is loaned to the army commissary to transport 2,000,000 pounds of meat to Manila. Built to carry fresh mutton to England, the ship uses an ammonia cooling system with decks kept well below freezing. Loading occurred at night to preserve the cargo before a long tropical voyage.
