Gordon Institute reports a strong spring term with 303 pupils on opening day and over 326 enrolled, raising total attendance toward 400 for the term despite financial worries. The institution continues to be a valued educational entity for Georgia residents.
Pike county voters backed the Democratic ticket in a decisive county election. The paper notes heavy Democrat organization in Barnesville and praise for workers including Eigar L. Rogers who mobilized a large turnout. Populists faced an overwhelming defeat, with the official count available in the next issue. The piece credits broad participation and predicts the ticket’s continued strength.
The Literary club meets in Matthews Hall on Friday evening January 18. The program features instrumental duets by Misses Kite Battle and Mittie Rose, readings by Miss Ione Murphey, a paper on Richard Malcolm Johnston by Prof. C. W. Steed, select reading from Johnston by Mrs. J. O. Walker, vocal duets by Misses Annis Pound and Maybelle Veal, and a celebration of Johnston’s golden wedding led by Miss May Lawbiin. Local notes by Mr. J. M. Cochrane and future program planning by Prof. H. M. Fletcher, Mrs. S. L. Saylor, and Miss Wille Reynolds.
The new year finds Mr J C Collier in the front ranks of business men ready to furnish the public with bargains in almost any line of goods. His immense stock allows selections and his experience helps him secure and offer bargains for the people. His trade is improving and announcements will appear regularly in the Gazer.
Reverend Hubert Willis of Iola Texas married Miss Florence Morrison of Hempstead Texas weeks ago. Willis, son of Mr and Mrs W H Willis, lived in Barnesville and is a Gordon Institute graduate now serving as a Texas minister. Friends here congratulate him on the union.
Mr Jackson reports a prosperous 1894, selling more wagons than ever. He began 1895 by sealing a large Georgia contract to supply 100 buggies to a major firm, a milestone for Barnesville and a strong New Year start, the Gazirre notes.
The Baldwin-Rogers Comedy Co arrived in the city yesterday and planned to perform at the opera house last night. The troupe features eighteen artistes and a fine orchestra. The Rogers Sisters previously drew crowds in the early fall, and the current company is said to be stronger than then.
Mr Edgar L Rogers presents himself as a reliable merchant in clothing and dress goods. He reports strong finances and readiness to serve customers in the new year with regular Gazerrer notices guiding purchases.
