Barnesville Georgia December 18 1893 notice from Gordon Institute BOARD OF TRUSTEES announces a new department offering free tuition for 100 days under public school law. Open January 8 to residents 6 to 18, with study limited by county rules. Higher courses available for a fee.
A fire in J C Collier store and originating in J C Turner barber shop prompted rapid mobilization by firefighters led by Wap Summers. Water from the town’s works quenched the blaze, saving the town and leaving Collier’s loss estimated at 5000 dollars insured. others suffered significant losses.
Barnesville will get a new post office in the room formerly used by Elder and Nelson barber shop. The larger space will allow longer hours, including Sundays, for lock box mail pickup. The office will be fitted up to please residents and provide more comfort and convenience.
The 1894 Spring term for Gordon Institute begins Monday January 8 with high hopes. Betsy Hamilton adds 10 dollars to Brook’s monument fund bringing total over 100 dollars. Ada Brown contributes on The Art Beautiful in Gazetern. Baptist church calls Rev W E Perryclear for 1894 pastor. Capt B M Turner sells land near Gogginsville at 20 dollars per acre. Tax collector J D Carreker reports large tax collections and plans to issue nearly a thousand tax fixtures. John M Brown of Upson county writes on finance to farmers. Wooden buildings to be replaced by brick if plans proceed. Monday night Christmas cantata and tree at Baptist church for children only presents allowed. Judge T J Simmons visits from Atlanta and is favored for re election.
