Mr Edward Hoffman of Acworth visited Barnesville this week to establish a jewelry store. He rented next to the Barnesville Savings Bank and plans to open in January. He will offer repairs and a stock of jewelry, guaranteeing satisfaction. He will move his family to Barnesville.
A Terraces show by local amateurs drew many visitors and praised animal, fowl, and acrobatic acts. The event was marred when a visitor set fire to show property, damaging displays. Participants listed include George Elder, Walter Marshburn, Warren Woodward, Ike Matthews, Louis Henderson, George Summers, and Walter Middlebrooks.
Summers Buggy Company buys land from Barnesville Savings Bank and plans a two story brick carriage repository of 80 by 40 feet near their present shops. The new building signals growth for Barnesville as founders George L. Summers and C. O. Summers are praised for industrious success and local prosperity.
The GazettE reports rapid growth in Barnesville with J. W. Stafford & Sons planning a major expansion for 1897. A new commodious shoe shop on Market street will join the current store, with millinery in the old space and a gents furnishings department added. The main store will offer extensive ladies goods and a cash system, aiming to be one of the state’s largest and finest stores outside major cities.
Barnesville hosted two Gordon Institute matchups with University of Georgia visitors and Thomaston, drawing large crowds. The UGA team won 20 to 6 in the Friday game, while Barnesville’s second team defeated Thomaston 54 to nil on Saturday. Observers praised sportsmanship and the visiting squad’s conduct during their stay.
Mr J S Lavender reported a peculiar accident at Lavender & Roush stave works in Spalding county last week. George Leak a Pike county negro at work there was killed when a circular saw in motion shattered into pieces striking him. One arm was nearly severed his head and neck split and cut. Despite efforts death occurred.

Central timetable altered with multiple arrival shifts. The Macon to Barnesville train now arrives at 5 30 p m. The Atlanta to Barnesville service arrives at 5 56 p m. The Atlanta to Central night train is set for 9 56 p m.
Gundy Howard announces a new dray business with a good horse and wagon and promises prompt excellent service. He seeks patronage from the public.

The death of Linton McGee, a former Gordon Institute student and 1896 graduate, caused sorrow in Barnesville. He died in Reidsville last Wednesday, leaving many friends and grieving parents.
