Bar nesville Georgia merchants pledge to close their shops on the evening of April 25 to the morning of April 27 1894 to honor fallen heroes of the lost cause except for funeral preparations. Invitations issued for the Twenty third anniversary exercises of the Eunomian and Lysian Societies at Gordon Institute to be held Friday evening April 27 1894. The event promises to be notable with extensive preparations and a well prepared program led by committees including Merritt Murphey and officers.
Mr T J Williamson a mail agent for Central sustained a dislocated shoulder and other injuries when a train collided with an open switch on the Southwestern railroad near Montezuma last Saturday night. The engine fireman was killed. Williamson and the fireman were the only injured. The wreck caused heavy damage to the engine and cars. Williamson was brought to Barnesville Sunday and is improving at Matthews Hotel.
Early morning on the Milner road Bud Matthews a sixteen year old boy is shot by Charley Peach a thirty year old man. Peach reportedly claims a fourth victim with two deaths. Sheriff Gwyn pursues Peach as locals fear a hanging if caught and tried. All suspects resided on W H Bolton's plantation.
A fire at the Elm street residence of William Downing Thursday noon was a small blaze. Nearby residents acted fast and fire companies were not needed as the flames were contained before gaining headway.
Judge John J. Hunt endorses Pike Superior Court clerk T. J. Blasingame after hearing the grand jury praise him. He cites the clerk as efficient, neat, and accessible with every paper indexed and easy to locate. The public will endorse Hunt’s praise of the clerk.
J C Collier, a leading Georgia merchant, ran a busy Saturday sale day. His store employed many clerks and moved twenty five suits of clothing with total daily sales near $1000. He emphasizes cash purchases, low prices, and strong stock across three large rooms.
A special party is planned to visit Suwannee Springs on the Suwanee River in Florida. Special rates and accommodations have been secured. Inquiries should go to G. A. Macdonald in Macon GA, general passenger agent of the Georgia Southern and Florida railroad.
The Granite Hall entertainment by the Sanford girls last Friday drew a well filled house and was praised as a splendid success. Net proceeds were respectable and the Blues added a neat amount to their treasury.
