Major Groups Hear Maciver on Europe Tour Impressions
Professor Robert Maciver, Lieb er Professor of Political Science and Sociology, spoke to economics and sociology majors on his summer tour of Europe. He described Italy's sense of destiny, business unease, youth views on war, and the impact of tax burdens on any drawn out conflict. He noted southern France suffering from tourism decline, high living costs in the north, and mixed sentiments about the gold standard. In Germany he found improving conditions and less tension, while England showed optimism but northern depression. He urged economic measures, internal and international, as the cure for Europe’s malaise.
