Barnard Bulletin notes semi weekly publication by Barnard College students for the Barnard Community. It lists postal handling as second class matter from October 19, 1928, at New York NY and provides subscription terms of $3.50 per year or 10 cents per issue.
The document lists editorial and staff roles including Geraldine Kirshenbaum as editor in chief and Sally Seidgoff as business manager. It names associate editors, feature editors, photography, news editors, advertising manager, staff managers, and multiple news board and probationary staff members with daily editors identified.
The Barnard College administration faces a chronic issue of housing day students for overnight stays. With a large freshman class this year, overflow is pushed to Johnson Hall and other options like the Parnassus Club and local hotels are inadequate or costly. Students urge action to provide inexpensive, safe sleeping facilities on campus or through nearby institutions, citing the 1952 and 1953 committees and Ruth Pierson 54 as advocates.
Miss Helen Wright directs the Office of College Activities at Barnard Hall, combining student affairs and special events. The office advises clubs, dance committees, conference chairmen, and faculty, coordinates spaces and budgets, and approves all social events. The Oct 16 Carnival faces a venue issue due to gym renovations, possibly moving to the campus lawn if rain cooperates. Wright, entering her second year, previously worked at Brearley School and will oversee tickets and information on campus events.
A college official says campus office hours have been unsatisfactory due to timing. The plan shifts to drop in or self scheduled appointments at students' convenience, with the secretary arranging calls and cards when needed to invite undergraduates for important matters.
Yale announces a long term study led by Seldon D. Bacon on college drinking. The project, based at Yale Center of Alcohol Studies, tracks how precollege environments shape student habits and how life events influence future patterns over the coming decades. Seventy seven percent of interviewees provided names for future reference.
Barnard College reports about half of its students took summer employment. Many worked in New York City as clerks or typists, while others stayed in home towns or counseled, served as waitresses, or assisted in public recreation areas. Some pursued major-field roles in hospitals, laboratories, or research. The Placement Office notes the program remains flexible with alumnae contacts available for guidance.
