Rivoli reviews The Count of Monte Cristo as lively melodrama with action and intrigue but not enough horror or fiery character. Edmund Dantes’s imprisonment, vengeance plan, and rise as the Count are compelling yet restrained, with a final fadeout that leaves expectations unmet.
