Prince Edward Desegregation Struggle Hits Public Schools
The state Supreme Court case spurred desegregation but no time limit was set. By 1959 county courts ordered integration, yet the County Board of Supervisors halted funding and most public schools closed. White residents created segregated private schools with public funds while many Negro children were unable to attend out of county. The United Federation of Teachers plans a summer program sending experienced teachers with college study credentials to address the gap.

Education drive for Prince Edward County growth
Queens College studies a Prince Edward County project and guarantees at least twenty students this summer. The effort seeks federal schools in the county, though past government action casts doubt. Northern students can pressure the government for a permanent system and train teachers for remedial work this summer. Contact Augusta Souza via student mail.
