Shall We Let Military Men Control Atoms

A debate over the McMahon Bill's civilian atomic control plan spawns a military oversight amendment by Senator Vandenberg. The Senate Atomic Committee, by 10-1, would allow a military board to review civilian actions deemed inimical to defense, provoking protest from Chairman McMahon and Manhattan Project scientists. An Army veto on research abstracts illustrates tensions between civilian control and military access as calls grow for peaceful use and civilian primacy. Liberal Club urges telegram support.
