The Ford Foundation Origin Story
The Ford Foundation started in 1936 in Michigan as a local charity. In 1950 Henry and Edsel Ford donated a large block of nonvoting Ford Motor Co. stock, transforming it into an international charity and moving its offices to New York. Today it operates as an independent private institution with Ford family trustees, though they no longer direct policy.
