Nostalgia aside, Barnard’s year centers on cultural growth with three Greek civilization lectures and a new focused literary magazine. Drama and Wigs and Cues staged six lost characters, Hi Fi concerts remembered Professor Gertrude Rich, and arts conferences with Columbia drew major artists. Student government reformed, and apathy slightly waned as the Young Democrats Club formed and Term Drive thrived. The Sports push inspired Barnard spectators despite senior exemption concerns.
Professor Marianna Byram, an honorary adviser since 1951, reflects on guiding Barnard's non graduating Class of 1955 through program changes language courses transfers and student government She cites sympathy self reliance patience humor and a streak of immaturity as key adviser traits and says the class mixes sadness and pride at graduation.
Barbara Reider profiles Diana Touliatou, new Undergraduate Association president, who wins the Frank Gilbert Bryson Memorial Prize for unselfishness. Her career at Barnard includes class president, Undergraduate Secretary, and Adviser for student government, noted for diplomacy and fair arbitration.
Marianne Whitfield suggests New Yorkers embrace city sights and events to beat heat and boredom. Highlights include Empire State Building, United Nations, Statue of Liberty, museums, parks, zoo and botanical gardens, plus summer concerts at Lewisohn Stadium and Goldman Band, and Amato Opera House offerings.
