Lecture By Professor Urey On Isotopes And Heavy Water
Professor Harold C. Urey of Columbia, discoverer of heavy water and Nobel laureate, spoke at the Harkness Theatre about isotopes and atomic theory. He traced overviews from 1803 to 1911 and explained how elements show differing atomic masses while retaining identical chemical properties. He noted neon first revealed mixed atomic weights and cited zinc oxygen germanium and tellurium as having multiple isotopes. The hydrogen case suggested possible heavier atoms, and the lecture touched the experimental challenge of detecting isotopes.
