Barnard College announces a semi weekly bulletin published by students for the Barnard Community. It notes second class matter status entered October 19 1928 at New York Post Office under March 3 1879 Act. Subscription rate three dollars fifty cents per year and ten cents per single copy.
Oberlin College and Swarthmore College have urged Barnard to back a Russian editor exchange. The plan covers fifteen editors who sought visas last summer. the State Department had refused earlier, prompting deferment. Barnard may revisit this semester and face debates on visas and campus visits.
Barnard College long provides an economical retreat for its students with a camp near Ossining New York six miles northeast of Ossining accessible from Grand Central Station. The facility includes a large living room a fireplace two bunk rooms a kitchen and counselor room with a maintenance deposit of over two dollars. Groups of at least ten with a faculty or alumna chaperone may book weekends for about five dollars for day students and three dollars for dorm students with meals funded through dorm allowances.
Barnard counts twenty two alumnae teaching at the college with three interviewed expressing views on changes from 1900 to today. Marianna Byram notes students pursue more activities and careers, while Inez Nelbach cites more married students and fewer hard requirements, and Alba Marie Fazia laments reduced study, library use, and courtesy alongside unrestricted cuts shaping learning.
The sev enth Congress of the United States National Students Association in Iowa this summer heard reports from American students who visited Russia. The NSA drafted requirements for exchanges stressing student to student contact, freedom from propaganda aims, and long term, flexible exchanges to gain representative views.
More than three hundred Barnard students work part time to cover tuition and living costs. Roles include salesgirls waitresses clerical workers librarians and testers among others. Dorothea Touraine supervises youth activities Marcia Selfin conducts Rockefeller Center tours and Lee Robbins scores vocational tests at the Johnson O Connor Research Foundation all via the Barnard Placement Office.
