Morningside Housing Plan Faces Opposition Over Costs
Public hearings on the cooperative middle income housing project in Morningside are set for December 10. Opponents from the Save Our Homes Committee warn rents would exceed residents’ means, while a separate low income project gains preliminary approval for 1720 units at about $9 per room monthly. The cooperative plan by Morningside Heights Housing Corporation aims to house about 981 families with rents from $16 to $22 per room plus a $450 down payment, backed by nine local institutions including Barnard College and Columbia University. The project spans Broadway to Morningside Drive, 125th to 123 Streets, part of a broader Morningside-Manhattan redevelopment effort.
